"Snowpocalypse" in Northern Virginia

By
Real Estate Agent with Keller Williams Realty

They were forecasting it for days:  "An Epic Snowstorm!", "Massive February Snowstorm!", "Snowmageddon!"  Well, they finally got one right.  Snowfall totals of 2 to 3 feet, trees down, 10's of thousands without power, roofs collapsing (including a hangar at Dulles Airport housing private jets).  I could only get pictures around my home because we're pretty much trapped for at least a couple of days.  But we're well-stocked with the essentials - bird seed, cat food, and a few bottles of wine :-)

We were shoveling the driveway for the third time ... can you imagine how deep it would have been if we'd waited for the end?  That's my mailbox peeking out of the snow on the right.

Yeah, my car's not going anywhere for a while ...

There's a deck under there somewhere ... I think the birdbath is out of commission for now :-)

The bird feeder was listing under the weight of the snow ... after I took this photo, we dug a path to the feeder so we could refill it.  The birds are happy!

"Could you please do something about that squirrel?"

As I write this, it appears that the end is nearly in sight ... and not a moment too soon.  For any of you who are missing snow, I have plenty that I'll give away free to a good home.  You haul ...

Nice pictures.  When we get a snow here in the desert, our hummingbird feeder always seems to get swamped with hummingbirds.  I guess all the birds know where to go for food when it snows.

Thanks, Jim!  We're definitely a 4-star restaurant ... for birds!

Great photos. I'd love to have a couple of feet of snow in N. GA.

Hi Glenda - Your pic of the cardinal is awesome! The red really pops against the snow-covered branches. Stay warm!

Glenda - you're pictures are awesome but I don't envy you the snow - Though it looks beautiful I wouldn't relish the shoveling.  Enjoy your time in.

Wonderful photos and the birds in the snow are a treasure. Most people think all birds migrate south but for those that observe beyond the snow, it is clear these little creatures endure what no man would do voluntarily. Spring is coming though it must feel more like wish than an inevitability.

Glenda, this is a really strange winter!  Good luck with all the snow!  I hope that you're able to dig out safely!  That is a lot of snow for anywhere in one storm!

Thanks, John ... I love photos of cardinals in the snow ... so cheerful!

Leah, I'm getting stir-crazy already ... I'm ready for it to be gone ... now!

Thanks, William ... we do our best to make sure the birds are well fed ... we filled the bird feeder at least 3 times yesterday!

Thanks, Tony ... this one was a record setter - 3rd largest accumulation in the last 100 years according to records kept at National Airport.  Largest ever according to records kept at Dulles Airport ... but it's only been around since the 60's.  Of course, we got far more where I live (near Dulles) than they got at National ... sigh.

Thanks, Marlene ... unfortunately, we're not finished yet.  Weather forecasts are calling for another 10" to 20" tomorrow <sigh>
