10 Ways to Meet New People in Your Community

By
Real Estate Agent with RE/MAX Executive Realty

We all know that one way we get referrals is through the people we know.  Here is a list of ways to meet new people in your community.  Whether or not it builds your business, it's still a wonderful way to connect to different types of people.

Join a health club.  Meet people while getting fit!  Taking a class that the club offers allows you to see the same people weekly, lending opportunity for conversation.

Explore your community's offereings.  Check out museums, local parks, historical sites and libraries.  You can find much of this information in the front section of your local yellow pages.

Join a book club.  Reading books and sharing your opinions is a great way to get to know people.  There are many neighborhood book clubs (ask around) or try your local library.

Walk your dog.  Dogs are great people-meeters!  Go to parks, the beach, school fields and town square.

Go to seminars.  Learn something new and make new friends with similar interests.

Get involved with local politics.  Who knows, maybe you could be the next mayor of your town.  Attend city council meetings to learn more.

Join an investment club.  Make money (hopefully) while making new friends.

Join a business association.  If you are a professional, join your local association.  Network for your business and personal life.

Attend or host community events and parties.  Attend a black-tie fundraiser, or host a neighborhood block party.  Newspapers are a great resource for finding out about upcoming events and social opportunities such as concerts, cooking and crafts classes, community theatre groups and sporting events.

Volunteer.  If you are passionate about a cause and like to help others, volunteering is an excellent way to connect with others.

Hi,  I'm new to active rain.  Go a step further and make note of your "giving back" and "volunteering" on your website.  I'm working with clients relocating to the area that found me from my website. I'm involved mostly in children's causes and he is a pediatrician.

Walk your dog  -- it's free, easy, and fun! People will talk to you no problem when they see you out regularly with your dog.

Thank you.  Great ideas.  It all works the thing is - JUST DO IT!  While standing in line for a coffee, smile at someone and they will smile back and then just talk - weather is always a great topic.    Thanks for sharing.

Those are all great ideas, there are also other clubs such as gardening.  Also don't overlook volunteering on a commitee for the village or town.

There were to many comments to read through them all but I recently joined a web site called www.meetup.com - Not sure if someone already mentioned it, but I went to a meet up for Weimeraner owners. It was a lot of fun, made several connections too! They have just about any type meet up group imaginable!

Just a word to the wise...The local politics thing can be VERY, VERY sticky.  You will make friends, you will also make enemies.  NO WAY AROUND IT unless you refuse to take a stand on anything - and then you just come across as indecisive.

The dog thing works...people who don't think much of me one way or another  - love my dogs and remember me because they remember them.

Thanks for all the good ideas today.  Whenever I go out anywhere, shopping, the doctor, dentist....etc. I always have a business card handy and start up a pleasant conversation that I can lead into about real estate. Judging the conversation I usually hand out my card, but always ask if.....'can I give you my business card please" perhaps somewhere down the road you'll need a dedicated Realtor.....Thanks!

All of these are great suggestions. You never know where that next client will come from and as real estate professionals we need to open ourselves up to as many new opportunities as possible, even if it takes us out of our comfort zone.
