Hi Mary, Although I live in Albuquerque I've never been to Ruidoso. When would be the best time to visit and what kind of things would there be for me and family to do?

Hi Rich,

Thanks for the inquiry.   I spent the first 25 years of my life in NM, but did not discover Ruidoso until my late 20's, then I wondered how did I not know about this place!  I've been here for 18 years now, and just love it.

There is always a lot going on, but the summer is definitely the high season.  The weather is cool and comfortable June-September.  The race track is the big draw in the summer, but there are also concerts and great restaurants. We have 7 golf courses in the area, so golf is also a favorite summer past time.  In the winter, we have skiing of course, and this year the snow is great!  During the fall, there are festivals almost every weekend.  For the kids, there is a small amusement park & miniature golf, gold panning, hiking, biking, camping, horseback riding & museums.  We are also close to Alamogordo which has White Sands National Monument and a great Space Museum.

The spring is, in my opinion, the least desirable time in the area.  Like most of NM, we get high winds, and it can still be chilly, but from June - November, you cannot beat the weather here.

Here is a link to 101 Things to do in Ruidoso:  http://www.ruidosonow.com/pdf/Attraction_Activities_Guide.pdf and another  link to our local events calendar: http://www.ruidosonow.com/events.aspx .

If you and your family do come up for a visit, be sure to check out renting a cabin instead of a hotel room.  Its a much better way to get the whole Ruidoso Experience as you can sit on your deck and watch the deer ... and sometimes bears mosey by.   As you can see, I love talking about Ruidoso, so just let me know if you need any more information or a recommendation for a cabin rental.
