A Field of Flags Blooms In Prospect Ct

Today, at the intersection of Rts 68 & 69 in Prospect Ct, blooms a field of American Flags. The Field of Flags was started almost five years ago at a local church, with each representing an American service man or woman killed in Iraq or Afghanistan.

This flag display was put up on Friday, March 26 and will stay here until it's taken down on April 18.

The flags will be in Prospect at the request of a Waterbury father who lost his son in Iraq. Organizers of this event got the necessary permission from the Town and the church to put up the flags at the intersection.

Originally, on October 23, 2005, members of the memorial Garden Committee of the Somers Congregational Church placed 2,231 flags, one for each American casualty in Iraq and Afghanistan.

The emotional impact of the memorial grew, and it has traveled to more than 30 churches of various denominations. The event is already booked through November of this year.

The current Garden has 5,350 flags. Alongside the garden sits a sandwich board with the names of all of the service people, alphabetically by state

The The display has made a run through numerous states and just returned from Tennessee. In the brief time that I stayed to visit this morning, many of the passersby paused to acknowledge and honk their horns. Some, like myself pulled in just to pause and say a prayer that this garden doesn't get too many new blooms.  Today, at least in Prospect Ct the blossums have special meaning.

While it makes for a beautiful display of the flag, it's an all too sad reminder of how many gave their lives for the freedoms we often take for granted.

A salute to the troops from me.

Beautiful....can you imagine how many would be needed for WWII? Very moving, keeping them in our thoughts and prayers.

Ed, that is a lot of flags, but more important a lot of lives.  This is unfortunately the price of freedom.

Ed, The Field of Flags was here in Bridgewater last summer, I took photos. Very impressive and very very sad. People stopped to walk through them and read the names on the board.

Beautiful display of respect Ed.  As you said, let's hope this garden doesn't get too many more blooms.
