Realtor to Realtor Common Courtesy ~ Do You Use It? Or, is it DEAD?

By

Your Lake Arrowhead Realtor would like to share some local Lake Arrowhead Information with you!

I think we can ALL agree that REALTORS work in a fast paced business. "Time is of the Essence" is key in Real Estate,  another thing we can agree on. But even though these two statements are extremely important, should we all practice REALTOR TO REALTOR COMMON COURTESY? Or is it DEAD?

The reason for my post is because of a recent situation. I was representing a buyer trying to purchase a property, along with many other Realtors and their buyers; a Multiple Offer ordeal. This property is a Bank Owned and I understand how busy a REPO listing agent can get dealing with MANY offers and the bank he/she is representing. However, is it okay to get so busy that you don't call a colleague (or at least have your assistant if you have one) to alert the other Realtor that a fax has been sent and to confirm the receiving Realtor got it?

Is it me or have people forgotten plain and simple "Common Courtesy?" I know when I am in negotiations with another Realtor, I ALWAYS call to make sure they've received: A. The offer.  B. The Counter  C. The Acceptance.  D. ANY fax I've sent.  I feel taking an extra 60 seconds out of my working day is VITAL in Real Estate.

Maybe I am just plain "old school" when it comes to manners, common courtesy and etiquette.  If that IS the case, well, then, I apologize ahead of time, because if I am in negotiations with YOU, you're going to hear from me...the "old fashioned" way, via phone.  Even though I have all the other "bells and whistles" and "tools of the trade" in this industry, I believe there is just no replacement for person to person contact.

Exactly!  I don't know why people can't just do the easy follow up items that make everyones transaction go smoothly...don't even get me started about showing reports!  Ugg....have a great day/easter and great post!

Kay, I agree.  I have been waiting 24 hours to hear if a faxed contract was received right now.  I know it's a holiday, the sellers just got back in town and so on.  And I am sure the listing agent is "busy" as well.  In old school days, we negotiated contracts in person and ran around to get signatures and initials immediately.  I think communication between agents is important to the transaction.

Kristin:  You have a GREAT Easter today!

Linda: I'm thinking some of the "old days" ways,  weren't so bad.

Kat, along with calling the agent, I make sure my offers are emailed and faxed.  If there are multiple offers, I believe the agents should be kept in the loop.  I've seen other agents never respond.

Kat, you are so right.  And thanks for the reminder.  Sometimes we do get so bogged down we don't have time to call everyone.  But you are right it is something we have to work on.  But I'm still old fashioned in that whoever holds the paper (originals) walks the paper - but that seems to have been forgotten as well.

Pamela:  I like your "walking the papers" term... never heard of it. Thanks for teaching me something new. :-)
