Being Built on Bedrock Is a Good Thing

Easter afternoon found Southern California once again doing a shake, rattle and roll to a 7.2 earthquake.  I continued to blog in my Rancho Palos Verdes office as I waited for a client to arrive and sign an offer.  As I rode out the 40 second (and it felt more like 4 minutes) quake I was reminded how blessed the Palos Verdes area is in geographic and geological terms.

Most of the geological reports I have had the pleasure to read state the majority of homes on the Palos Verdes Peninsula are built on bedrock.  Not only is it one of the most beautiful regions in Southern California it is also one of the most stable, geologically speaking.  The area has its share of ancient landslides, and even an active one.  The soil is expansive and shrinks and expands according to the moisture level in the soil, but being built on bedrock is a good thing.

The Northridge Earthquake occured nearly twenty years ago and caused extensive damage in surrounding areas.  I must admit it was quite a shaker, but upon investigating my Palos Verdes home the only evidence of earthquake damage was my fireplace tools fell over.  All glass remained intact.  All pictures stayed on the wall.  Most important of all, all safe and sound family members convened in the family room to catch the news reports.  The earthquake aroused us from our shaking beds but bedrock beneath us put us on solid ground--or as solid as it gets in Southern California.

It must be a very strange and helpless feeling to go through a quake.  Glad to hear all is OK there.

Jeff - Even though we know they can happen at any moment it still surprises us with its arrival.  It certainly was not on my iPhone calendar!
