Truth Or Fiction?

As The Story Goes

You lock your car using the remote on your key chain.  As you walk away you hear your car door unlock.

While traveling, a young man stops at a roadside rest to use the bathroom.  When he comes out to his car less than 4-5 minutes later, someone had gotten into his car and stolen ..... you name it.

Truth Or Fiction??

Is there a device now in use to clone your security code when you lock the doors on your car using your key-chain locking device?

Can they sit a distance away and watch for their next victim knowing you are going inside of the store, restaurant, or bathroom and that they now have a few minutes to get into your car?

There have been emails circulating the Internet now for a couple of years saying this has happened

After reading some of the information found by doing a google search for"keeloq encryption" and a variety of other terms I believe it is possible but not worth the effort as a good car thief can be into any automobile and gone in less than 2 minutes.

When my car was broken into they used a small sledge hammer

Yes, I got that email last year and I assumed that it was true, but I don't know.  I can only lock my car with the key fob.  When I try to lock it with the button, it unlocks when I close the door, I must be doing something wrong.

hi Kathy,

I remember that email .... I try not to leave anything in my car that might attract thieves...it does make my handbag pretty heavy though when I cart all of that stuff around!

Sounds like fiction to me. Too many people leave their keys in the car to make thieves need to go to that much trouble. : )

Kathy - Great post, and a good reminder  for us all.  I always look around before I lock my car with the remote nowadays because of that info....

I'm not sure if it truth or fiction.  My car won't lock if my keys are inside......sure helps me to double check to make sure my car is locked.

I put my purse in the trunk when I go on my hikes but my husband said it's not even safe there.  If soomeone breaks into my car there is a button to unlock the trunk.  Easy peasy theft.

Jenny - out of sight out of mind ..... provides a small measure of security thieves generally look into the car for potential items to steal before breaking in ..... if their intent does not include stealing the car.

Kay - I suppose in the long run it does not matter as most security measures are at best a deterrent not a solution.

Betty and John - how would you explain to your insurance company ..... no I did not lend the thief my car even if leaving the keys was an open invitation.

Katherine - my car requires me to lock it twice with the button on the door to help prevent me from locking it with my keys in the ignition.
