Washington County, Oregon’s past re-visited through my lens (Part 1)

By

One thing I love about having my new digital camera is I can really capture some interesting shots. Some of those shots tell a story, others are just a point of view, either way, pictures are something to be enjoyed and the past is something I’ve always enjoyed. I just wish I could go back and find out what it was really like back then.

In part one of my series Washington County, Oregon’s past re-visited, we will be going back in time to some old school houses, churches and pioneer cemeteries that I found while out in the North Plains area of Washington County. I do have to say I was finally glad to see some weather come through that I was able to go and take these, it seems like it has been forever since the sun has been here.

School unknown

OK, at first we thought this was Jackson School as it is at the end of Jackson School Road, but according to the history books, that school burnt down. This is now a church, but it does show that at one time the school in the area was used as the local church by the community. The weird part is this next picture was also of a school that was less than a half mile from the one above. (This one has now been converted in to a house)

Don't know much about this school either, can't figure out why
needed two schools so close, the population certainly didn't
seem to warrant it.

Helvetia Community Church

Helvetia Community Church Historical Marker

Helvetia Community Church Graveyard (Pioneer Cemetary)

Helevatia Community Church and graveyard was pretty cool find, it looks
like the olders  grave stone we could find was dated 1898
(I know for those of you on the east coast, this doesn't seem old)

Bethany Pioneer Cemetery

The unknown
This one was a little sad to me having cleaned up tomb stones as part of an
Eagle project for a friend back in 1986.

Lone Swing
This empty swing next to a cemetary seemed kind of fitting at the time of the short

I love history and finding old finds like this to me is better than finding a $5 bill on the ground. I hope to have many more in this series as Washington County is pretty large and has lots of history. (So stay tuned)

I'll be following your series, I have a soft spot for Oregon even though I left her over half my lifetime ago.  RAIN!  Blame it on the RAIN!  I stop at any pioneer cemetery I come across, a person can learn so much about who settled in the area, where they came from, when they arrived and sadly, about the apparent illnesses that claimed many lives at an early age.

Cynthia, that is part of the problem right now, so I can't blame you. It took me almost 3 weeks to get all these pictures because of the weather. Even a die hard Oregonian like me was starting to get depressed as I had this camera in a plastic bag.

Todd,

Interesting array of shots. I like the house converted from the school. Two schools? One for boys and one for girls? One for grades, one for high school? :)

I love Oregon history and old homes.  We had dinner at the Joel Palmer house in Dayton last night.  I think they said it was built in 1892.  The grounds are beautiful and the dinner was awesome!

Thanks for sharing these very nice historical photos!  We lived in Washington County many years ago, even in North Plains briefly, but I don't recognize any of these spots.

Todd,

Great series and I love it. Telling the story of a community is so important. Too many do not realize when settling somewhere you become part of the ongoing story of that community and knowing where it has come from helps you be the best steward of that story.

Nice pictures - so much fun to capture some of the history of the area in photos.  Can't decide if my favorite is the sign telling about the church history or the grave marker with flowers blooming by it...

Todd, great pictures! I enjoy the things you find interesting in the area!  And even better, they're close enough for me to take my family.
