Understanding Constant Pressure and Variable Frequency Drive Well Systems.

A VFD or Variable frequency drive is not a new thing to the market but in the last ten year's they have been becoming more prevalent in residential applications. Now VFD is equated with the term constant pressure because that is one of its main function is supplying the home with a constant pressure feed however that is not the only benefit of these systems. One of the biggest questions i receive is what exactly is a Constant Pressure pumping system's/ Constant Pressure pumping system? I am writing this article in an attempt to unveil some of the mystery surrounding these VFD/ Constant pressure submersible pumping systems. To start a VFD system has many useful applications not only for residential portable water well use but also has brought irrigation wells to a whole new level of pressure eliminating the cycle stop valves( which we wont even get into).

Now the benefits of a Variable Frequency Drive system do not end at Constant Pressure only. A Drive unit has a soft start/ stop feature built in eliminating the torque of the motor starting at such a force it slams and beats the pump off the sides of the well putting wear and tear on the unit and wire. Now with this system you still utilize a torque arrestor to try and hold the pump in place in the well and you would still use wire guides but that feature practically eliminates those well concerns. The Drive unit can utilize a smaller pressure tank which means reduced replacement costs but no worries it can also utilize the larger tanks that you already have in line. These units have built in diagnostics flashing you a series of codes to tell well technician's exactly what the system malfunction is. Variable frequency drives have built in surge protection which include high/ low voltage surges as well as Lightning surges in an effort to prevent electrical burn outs. The pumps speed is controlled to provide optimum performance without overloading the motor making for a longer lasting system.

The point of a variable frequency water well drive unit is to increase the longevity of your water well pumping system. It decreases the pumps running time which would result in possible energy savings depending on usage.

Now the variable Frequency constant pressure drive units have many names depending on the manufacturer. Grundfos has the SQE systems, Franklin Electrics line would be the Mono Drive and Subdrive series now those are the only lines i personally am familiar with. Our line of choice is Franklin Electric because we have found that their systems withstands New England Water better than any other system on the market. Franklin Electric also is the only company to have a 2 wire drive system in their line giving a broader spectrum of clientele the Constant Pressure Option. These systems may be installed in existing application's as well as new installs. The information above is specific to the Franklin Electric line.
