Carleton VarneyRenowned interior designer Carleton Varney will host The High Style of Dorothy Draper, May 14-16 at The Greenbrier.  Varney, president of Dorothy Draper and Company, the oldest established interior design firm in the country, will share his personal recollections about Dorothy's influence on the interior design movement and provide an in-depth look at her 1940s redecoration of The Greenbrier.

One of America’s best known interior designers, Varney is the designer and curator for The Greenbrier. He is associated with the restoration and decoration of countless hotels and resorts all over the world, including Dromoland and Ashford Castles in Ireland ; The Waldorf Towers and Plaza Hotel in New York; Grand Hotel on Mackinac Island, Michigan; and The Breakers in Palm Beach.

Dorothy Draper

The history of Dorothy Draper is unique.  In 1923, she  established the first interior design company in the U.S.   She is well known as a giant in the design industry, designing her own exclusive fabrics for her clients – such as her Romance & Rhododendrons and Fudge Apron which she used at the Greenbrier.

Events for the Dorothy Draper weekend includes:  A welcome reception on Friday evening begins the weekend. The film, “The Lifestyle of Dorothy Draper” will be presented on Saturday morning, followed by a private interior tour and lunch with Varney.  On Saturday evening, guests will enjoy an exclusive performance by Broadway star Rita McKenzie. The weekend concludes with a presentation on interior design by Varney.

Carleton Varney ’s design philosophy stresses the use of bright colors and the rejection of all that is impractical and drab. His versatility in design can be seen in the wide range of products that bear his mark, such as furniture, crystal and linen designs.  In embracing this practice, he continues the Draper tradition by being associated with the imaginative use of vibrant colors, floral patterns and bold contrasts.

The High Style of Dorothy Draper package starts at $465 per night, based on double occupancy. The resort fee is waived for guests on this package; taxes are additional. For reservations or information, call 800-453-4858 or visit www.greenbrier.com.
