Joanne was looking for a new mobile home to put next to the lake when her brother-in-law, an air traffic controller, had an unorthodox suggestion. After losing her last home to a fire, this time Ms. Ussery, a hairdresser, decided on something fireproof...  A 127 foot Boeing 727!  She paid $2,000 for the fuselage, $4,000 for a house-moving company to move it to her lot, six months and $25,000 to renovate it. The resulting house has some unusual features, and is built to last. [CNN Dec 27, 1996 Benoit, Mississippi]

Joanne Ussery and Her Comfy 727

The original airplane fold-down stairs were kept and are operated by a garage door opener and one of the original airplane restrooms still works as it always did. And the cockpit suspended over the lake below? Her own personal jacuzzi of course.

Fascinating!  And I thought I had done some unusual things on planes!  Mostly though, WHERE is it?  At first I thought it must be one of the US Virgin Islands, but you say it's beside a lake?  Is it in Florida?  DO TELL, PLEASE? ! ?

A friend of mine just sent me some pictures of this plane. Apparently it's in Benoit, Mississippi! If you do a google search on "Joanne Ussery" you can find the pictures.

Congratulations on your courage and patience to work in buildings. Keep it up, because you'll live a long time.
