The Old Fair Oaks Village - A Community Treasure

Fair Oaks Village by Myrl Jeffcoat
(Slide Show contains 12 images)

Those who dwell in the Greater Sacramento Area are a fortunate lot!  In addition to being cradled in the valley between San Francisco, 90 miles west, and Lake Tahoe, 90 miles to the east, we also are at the threshold of The California Mother Lode, and within an hour of Napa Wine Country.  It doesn't get much better than that!

Add to this good fortune, two rivers, The American, and The Sacramento, plus a bevy of lakes, reservoirs, and ponds, and things get really interesting for those who love water sports and recreation.  The American River Bike Trail and Recreation Area is a 22 mile stretch of pavement, which connects Discovery Park, near Old Sacramento, to the west, and Folsom to the east.

Personally I like the variety of little communities within the Greater Sacramento Area - all having their own individual flavor and personality.

One of my favorites is The Village in Old Fair Oaks.  The Village exists next to the American River, between the City of Sacramento, and Folsom.  It enjoys a slower, quaint existence, with little antique shops, a bistro, coffee shop, old time hardware store, and other businesses, which border the park at the village center.

Another interesting thing about The Village, is it often appears there are more chickens that inhabit the area than their human counterparts, adding to the charm!

From the photos above, you will note fellow ActiveRainer, Susan Neal's office, "Century 21 Noel David).  Susan is fortunate enough to work right there in the thick of Fair Oaks Village activities.

The park amphitheater presents Shakespearean theater during the summer months.  Usually in September the community hosts The Annual Chicken Festival.

One of my favorite restaurants, Carmelitas, serves up amazing Mexican food.  The Old Fair Oaks Bridge, provides great foot and bicycle access across the American River, connecting Fair Oaks to Gold River and Rancho Cordova.

Hi Myrl, I enjoyed your presentation of Fair Oaks.  It seems you have a very efficient street department in cleaning up the streets of Fair Oaks.  They don't by chance work for "chicken feed", do they?

Will you ever do a blog on how Sacramento came to be the capital of the Golden State?  I would like to know how that came to be.

What a wonderful little place, although truth be told, I am not a fan of chickens or roosters, having been attacked by a rooster in my past!

The slide show is wonderful! Another of my favorites is from there too, Sally Dunbar!

Hi Myrl, What a neat little place, it seems little anyway.  How many people live in Fair Oaks? I'm curious why the chickens are there, too .... And a 22 mile bike trail would be really fun in such a beautiful setting

Hey Myrl, what a great little place! It looks so quaint and restful! Love the way the chickens just strut their stuff like they own the place. Lucky Susan.

Hi Myrl - That place has a lot in common with Key West. They've got roosters all over the place down there!

Jim, Tony, Darcy - You're very welcome!

Robert - Absolutely!  Park your car, grab a latte, and walk around!  You'll find the natives friendly:-)

Jim - It seems the older I get, the more I realize that!

Andrea - You're right Sally is from Fair Oaks.  Although her office is not in the Old Village part of the community.

Richard - There's a funny thing that goes on in my mind. . .I really never have thought of other agents as competition!  They're just someone I share a profession with!

Mary - A lot of folks live in the entire community of Fair Oaks; but the Old Village part of the community is smaller.  I'd bet there are a couple hundred chickens than roam the few square blocks surrounding the park.

Al and Peggy - It is amazing how much I can feel like I'm living a rat race, but can make myself over to the village a few minutes away, and feel totally different about life.

Debi - It truly is!  And each one is so very different in personality!

Marlene - The Old Village has lots to see and photgraph!

Suzanne - I use PaintShop Pro to do the slide shows.  I did a tutorial on how to create them which can be accessed at: http://activerain.com/blogsview/1317373/activerain-photo-blogger-animated-blogging-tutorial-using-paintshop-pro

John - You're right about Key West.  When I was there in February, I had those same thoughts.  Between the chickens and the Hemmingway six toed cats, they just about rule Key West!

When I worked in Lafayette, I lived in Antioch, and I actually spent more time playing around in the area between Antioch and Folsom Lake than I did in San Francisco and Oakland. My San Diego friends thought I was nuts, but my Texas friends knew that you can take the man out of the country, but if he finds a way to get back to the country, any country, all bets are off.
