Are you the worst doctor?

Birch Aquarium, La Jolla, CaliforniaMany years ago, the great comedian George Carlin stated that if you ranked the nation's doctors, there had to be a worst one. Someone has to be at the bottom of the list. Makes you think, doesn't it?

I was reminded of that recently when a friend asked me to rank The Beatles' songs. I've tried to do that many times before but find that I can't. Each song is different and provides me with a different mood or memory. I like them all, and trying to rank them does a disservice to each song and the moods and memories that each song brings to me.

Ranking and labeling things seems to be part and parcel of human nature, and it's one way that people choose which professional they are going to work with. They might rank them on price, hours open, type of services, or even things that really don't have anything to do with the work being considered. For example, I've had people choose me because I was from Texas, had a cat, liked gardening, liked trains, and probably a couple of other things that I'm not remembering right now.

How are your prospective Clients ranking you? Is it time to evaluate your business and services to ensure that you are not the worst doctor?

Russel: Interesting post- that is definitely food for thought about how our clients perceive us.  Objectively, though, I think "Revolution 9" from the White album ranks as the worst Beatles song.  Thanks for sharing!

Hi Russel,  Interesting concept.   I'm wondering though.  Do people make a decision based on what they are attracted to or choose an alternative based on a percieved negative ?   Birds of a feather...

Hi Russel, great perspective on how people may be ranking us and our services.  Ranking reviews can be an excellent tool for prospectors, but also on the other hand an unfair review by someone that has an axe to grind or by someone that is hard to please no matter what may hurt the process.  I think it's a good idea to take all of this into account if there are mostly positive reviews and rankings with a particular business.  If a business is ranked at the bottom by more than one source, it's time for that business to make some drastic changes.

Hi Russel:  I give such personal service that my clients will usually tell me outright how much they love me!   I literally put myself in their situation as each home buyer has a unique set of circumstances.   Some are divorcing, some are first time buyers, some are investors!

Some like that I'm from Oregon.  Some like that I have red hair.  Some like that I'm an independent broker and some don't because of that.  I think it really depends on the first impression you make, you are going to win some and lose some.

Hi Russel,

It is good to know how you are ranking with your client. I often ask for a letter of recommendation and always am thrilled with the letters I get. When my clients refer friends, neighbors and family I know I'm on the right track!

I have been thinking about a post on 20 game losers in Baseball and why they are actually good pitchers.  Sales wise I am not near the top, however, my clients like me and are loyal.

I've not met very many clietns that considered choice by ranking. But that is an interesting thougt process.  Most of us do it when we are car shopping or house shopping, etc.  I would never consider that when I'm shopping for a hair dresser, doctor, etc.  People become my clients usually because someone they trust recommneded me, or they did a google search and landed on some of my "stuff"... they tell me that they are "comfortable" with me...

Russel...Your post is very thought provoking.  I agree we need to look at our "business" and see how we are representing ourselves, but we also need to need that we can't be all things to all people.  There will be some who just rank us low for whatever their reasons.

There is actually a site to rank doctors...

http://www.ratemds.com/

Its kind of scary actually. Find out where your doctor ranks.

Maybe we should have a system like this for real estate. Might be a great way to weed out the "worst" agents.

Hey, Folks!

Thanks for stopping by and commenting. I had a lot of fun doing this and hope you enjoyed the fruits of my labor.

Since I'm so late getting back to the comments in my own blog, I won't take the time to respond to each comment individual. What I will do is visit your blogs, read your posts, and comment there. That way you'll get a few points from my visit and I just might learn something, make a new friend, etc.

I will read through all the comments here, and if there are any that need a response, I'll make those below.

Best wishes to everyone for health, happiness, peace, and prosperity!

Hey, David - Revolution 9 is the worst Beatles song, but when you realize that it's not a song but something much more, and then listen to it intent and creatively, it's brilliant.

Hey, Tamara - When I went to buy my handy dandy Canon Rebel XSi on the Internet, I checked the reviews of the company. I found 14 negative reviews, and the were pretty bad. But when I looked at the over 13,000 positive review, well, everyone is entitled to one mistake for every 1,000 transactions or so.
