One way to keep pigeons off your roof

large bag of unsalted peanutsI bought my home new in 1991.  I soon realized that pigeons seem to like new construction.  There are 11 homes on my lane and I would count 10 to 15 pigeons on each roof.  What I am going to say next isn't an understatement, pigeons are a mess!

It wouldn't be unusual for me to climb up on my roof a couple of times a week with a hose and broom.  The droppings those rats with wings birds left behind were an eyesore.  Whenever the pigeons would try to build a nest, I would sweep it off the roof.

My neighbors and I talked about how we could get the pigeons to leave.  The neighbor to my right decided to hang a fake owl from an eave.  The pigeons liked to sit on the owl's head.  Then my neighbor had a professional come out and tack netting to his roof.  The professional caused my neighbor's roof to leak.

The neighbor to my left was a rogue police officer with a pellet rifle.  One early morning I came out of my house to retrieve the newspaper.  I looked up to find my neighbor in his baby blue terry cloth bathrobe, with his pellet rifle balanced on the head of my pink pig mailbox, aimed at my roof.  I hit the deck.

Eighteen years go by, and I still had a pigeon problem.  Then one day I spotted a neighbor throwing peanuts out to the street.  He told me he was feeding the crows and scrub jays because he thought that they, being very territorial, would drive the pigeons away.  So I started throwing peanuts out as well.

I'm happy to report that after feeding our other birds, our pigeon problem is over.  Costco sells big bags of peanuts for $5 and I buy one every month.  If you are having pigeon problems and you have territorial birds in the neighborhood as well, this might work for you.  An added bonus is the entertainment of watching the crows and jays waiting for our garage door to open every morning.  Just make sure you buy the unsalted peanuts, I can't imagine what these birds would be like with high blood pressure!

Interesting story and a great solution. I never would have thought of using peanuts to get rid of pigeons!

Learn something everyday.  We don't have a pigeon problem but we do have a great population of Osprey's which make a mess when the finish their dinner of half eaten fish.  You never know where the remains are going to land. Yuck!

Cindy - we had Osprey for 1 year, the pigeons didn't like them being around so I actually had a 1 year reprieve before discovering the peanuts.  And I couldn't tell you why pigeons don't eat the peanuts, they didn't even go near them.  We have a lot of red tail hawks and they are no problem at all.  Beautiful, actually.

John - I am thrilled that I am rid of this nuisance for only $60 a year.  And it is so fun to watch the crows and jays annoy each other.  The jays are MUCH smarter.

Ken - that's the funny part, I don't live in a city.  The closest city is San Francisco (45 miles).  I couldn't figure out why they were here in the first place, but they sure didn't want to leave.

Cynthia,

I'm glad I subscribe to your blog.  I had stopped buying peanuts at our regular bird store because of the cost.  Now I'm headed to Costco.  Thanks!

Cynthia, the most effective way to keep the pigeons off your roof is to throw birdfood onto your neighbours' roofs when they are sleeping at night.

Carra - and fun too

Malcolm - LOL, you just reminded me that our baby back ribs ended up on my neighbors roof, I'll have to blog about that some day.

Tom - When I left to go on vacation, my neighbor took over for me.  He was afraid the pigeons would come back while I was gone.  Everybody is well trained and well stocked!

Cynthia:  Wow... what a great idea.  Rats with wings, huh ?  LOL.  I know some people like that, too.  Without the wings.  Now, with all the fun of watching the crows and scrub jays fighting off the pidgeons... you might be able to cancel your cable, as well.

Brad - LOL, this was one of my first blog posts, I had forgotten about it! The price of peanuts has gone up, they are $7.00 now but still well worth it.
