In Honor of Mothers

Mary Cassatt PaintingIn Honor of Mothers

Since being a mother is one of the most important jobs that anyone can do, it seems completely appropriate that a day should be set aside to pay tribute. But, what exactly is the history behind the day we call "Mother's Day."

In early Rome, the major celebration revolved around the Greek mother of the Gods, Rhea. Societies worshipped similar mother figures including Earth Goddesses and Mountain Mothers.  During these times, games were held to honor these most revered women.

In England during the 1600's the celebration grew to include actual Earthly mothers and earned the name "Mothering Day." This day was significant and had a direct connection to Lent.  It provided everyone with a reprieve from the fasting so that families could enjoy a great feast with their families.

In 1907 a schoolteacher in West Virginia named Anna Jarvis started a movement to set up a special day to honor her own mother, Ann Maria Reeve Jarvis. She embarked on a journey that lead her to hundreds of prominent business people and legislators who all helped in the creation of a day to pay tribute to her mother and to others.

Finally, in 1914 President Woodrow Wilson proclaimed the second Sunday in May as a national holiday and an official "Mother's Day."

By way of flowers, gifts and outings at restaurants we use this day to honor the person who brought us into the world.

My own mother, Theresa Millette Charron enjoyed music, dance and particularly movies. Since one of her favorite film stars was Claudette Colbert she graced me with that name.  I thank her for doing so, since I have always liked it - and I thank her for so many other things.

To all the mothers in Massachusetts and throughout the country, this is a day to enjoy - one that is dedicated especially to you.

Claudette:  This is a great post.  A bit of history and some insight into your own family.  I think you have an artist streak in you to be able to pull it all together so eloquently.

Claudette - Very interesting information on the history of Mother's Day. I liked the way you tied it into your family as well.

Kathy:

I hope you have a fabulous dinner with your children and grandchildren. You certainly deserve it.

Teral:

Thank you.  I will accept that even though I am not a mother.

Jim:

Well said.  Their time with us is much too short, but greatly appreciated.

Randy:

It is the certainly one of the toughest jobs and the most undervalued, I think.

Betty & John:

Thank you.

Richard:

Yes, you do.  She was also clever enough to give me a name that rhymes.

Steve:

I am sure that the birth of your son has forever made Mother's Day even more special.  My birthday wishes to him.

Chris Ann:

Thank you.  Actually, I was an art major for awhile and my paintings hang on our walls since my husband likes them.  The painting in this post is by one of my favorite artists, Mary Cassatt. An American woman who studied with the French Impressionists and made it into that exclusive club.

Judy:

Thanks very much. I hope you have a great Mother's Day as well.

Craig:

You are so right. Mother goes onto the short list of people who actually love "unconditionally."

Thanks so much.
