FAMOUS TEXAS RANCHES, NUMBER ONE

By
Real Estate Agent with Century 21 Shirley Hooks, Inc.

When I thought about writing on some of the famous Texas Ranches I wanted to start with the YO Ranch that covered parts of several counties in the area where I live, Kerr County.  However it is not the largest in Texas by any means being only 600,000 thousand acres but very famous at least in Texas.  I am going to write about The YO later because I wanted to start with the largest ranch that being The XIT Ranch.

Some of the history of The XIT Ranch which was the largest ranch in the world under fence and in 1880 it consisted of three million acres.  It sprawled from near Lubbock Texas at the old ranch headquarters all the way to the Texas and Oklahoma state line.  The ranch was roughly thirty miles wide all in the Texas Panhandle.  The XIT ranch covered portions of ten Texas counties and almost all of some of the counties.

The first cattle on the ranch were Texas Longhorns starting in 1885.  Thousands of longhorns were driven up the trail to the number one division headquarters at Buffalo Springs, thirty two miles north of Dalhart Texas.  The XIT ran a herd of 150,000 head of cattle at it's peak and furnished beef cattle for a large part of the U.S. market.

The old foreman's house, bunkhouse and corrals built at Buffalo springs and still stand being the oldest structures in Dallam County Texas.

Only a few years ago the ranch was sold in parts to ranch owners and investors.  It still remains one of the best known ranches in the world.  You can learn more about the XIT by doing a search for XIT Museum and visit the museum history page www.xitmuseum.com

Some information obtained from the above museum site.

Richard, Thanks for commenting on this post.  The next one is on the King Ranch a smaller ranch of only 1.2 million acres.  I hope you do view this post there is so much to say and I sure could not even scratch the surface of the information but the web site tells it all.

Don: Thanks for sharing a little information about the YO Ranch. I will check out the link and bookmark for future reading. So many of these ranches are being sold off so we need to be sure to follow the future of some of these old and famous ranches.

Carl & Ceil,   Thanks for the comments.  I have information on a number of historic and famous ranches in Texas but there does not seem to be much interest from readers.

Hello Don, I am a certified arborist in the Permian basin area and service a number of ranchers for their pruning need on many old and historic trees. I am looking to expand my service area and enjoy working for this type of clientele but am not sure of a direction to take when searching for a list of old ranches that could possible use my services. Any thoughts would b appreciated!
