On The Road Again in Canada and the United States

As Willie Nelson sings, 'on the road again'; road trip season has begun for 2010, are you ready? It doesn't really matter if it is a mapped out 18 hour drive, a 3 hour cruise or an hour up the road, some thought and pre-planning will make it more enjoyable.

car loaded up with people & suitcases
Sure you must check the usuals;
how are the tires, is the spare in the trunk, what is the gas and oil levels, these shouldn't be overlooked, but there is much more to think about than that!

Twice last year, we saw road incidents that had the traffic lined up for miles
, fortunately on the opposite side that we were travelling, and we thought; hope those drivers have enough gas, coolant, oil and that they didn't need a bathroom break, because they didn't have one coming for quite a bit.

So that leads us into road trip tip number

               1.  Don't leave required bathroom breaks & gas fill-ups to the last minute, you never  know what is just up the road
            2.  If it is an extended trip, pace it out so you can take breaks every few hours.  One great idea is to pack a lunch and instead of stopping at a fast food chain
along the way, you can relax at a park, take in the scenery & let the kids blow off some steam.
            3.  Keep a soft sided cooler accessible filled with healthy snacks, a few sugary snacks and drinks. Make sure to use straws and also lids on hot drinks to avoid to spills.
            4.  If room permits, a pillow & blanket or two for extra comfort are great to have on board and so are audio books.
            5.  An emergency kit complete with lots of band-aids, antibiotic creme, wet wipes & gauze kept somewhere easy to grab.

Yes, it is road trip time, what tips can you to add to this list?

Al and Peggy, you can always tell who has not properly planned those much needed bathroom breaks.  They are the ones standing on the side of road watering the grass :) :) :)

Yes, Wanda, am learning to appreciate them, not one for really long road trips though. YES, toilet paper, good one!!!

Hey Gerry, ya, checking all those things is a good idea in the winter time. After our experience in Bluefield Virginia last winter, you can BELIEVE we will be checking! Maybe you just changed our minds on the whole road trip idea....LOL

Yup, cause even in some washrooms restrooms on the roads, there is no paper! ;(

Makes for really green patches right George!?

After the movie we watched last night Michael, not sure we will be going anywhere!

Hi Al and Peggy - Whenever I get on a boat, I **** ALWAYS **** ask if the boat cruise / ride / tour will be three (3) hours in length.  If it is, I won't go on it.  The smart boat operators and staff always understand why I am so concerned about such tours. ;)

You are most welcome Chris!

YES, especially if the boat is the type with no head Marc!

Absolutely Malcolm, we seem to have lots of service stations in town but nearly enough when you get out 'there'

I had a college roommate who used to take an empty plastic bottle with a cap on it in case he needed to take a little bathroom break while driving or stuck in traffic. Maybe that's why I never went anywhere with him.
