 Potomac News

I know it isn't the Wall Street Journal or the London Financial Times but I was very happy to see an article about my Earth-Sheltered Home listing appear on the front page of the Potomac News today.  Interestingly enough the Washington Post has been telling me for 3 weeks that they were going to run an article about the house.  The reporter kept saying I'm working on it.

When the reporter from the Potomac News called I asked her how she had learned about the property.  She stated that she had been doing a google search on local real estate and came across my blog post on a "green lifestyle" home.  When she saw the pictures she knew that she wanted to feature the home in the paper.  Her call came in on a Thursday afternoon.  Friday morning the reporter met me at the house and she called the owner (who now lives in Delaware) and her it is today on the front page.

One of the things that the reporter didn't add to her story is besides the energy savings the maintenance savings are incredible as well.  If you think of any other 25 year old house in our area you realize that the owners have had to at minimum replace the roof,  the windows, and most likely replaced the original wood siding. This home has had the front trim repainted and the roof reseeded.  I will admit that mowing the roof seems a little odd but if you are going to mow your yard what's the difference?

The best part of the story will be when we find new owners!

That is one cool house Cindy.  I lived in Fairfax county for 30 years and my son was born at Prince William hospital.  We're now in Florida.  Thanks for sharing that incredible house!

I have a cousin that lives in Kansas that built an home - grows grass on the roof.  I was afraid of the mold issue.  Not enough knowledge on my part to appreciate the home.  Yours looks wonderful.  Congratulations on a great home.  Can't wait for it to sell.

Over the past 30 years there have been a number of earth sheltered homes built in this area.  Moisture detailing is critical in these homes.  I have been in one that was seriously eaten by wood destroying insects.  I would feel comfortable inspecting this type home.

Cindy, Here is a good place to post earth homes . I have listed and sold a few. The one in SW Wisconsin under sold section is one I sold a few years ago and this site will post them for free.

Thanks for all the comments.  The biggest question about the home seems to be mold.  I have watched the video on this home being built and you can see them driving two bulldozers over the roof moving the dirt in place over the concrete roof and  waterproof membranes.  In the 25 years this house has existed there has never been any mold.  Good air circulation and plenty of light.  Termites aren't a problem because the only wood is a few interior studs that divide the two interior bedrooms and baths.  We are having an open house this Sunday from 1-4 if anyone in the area wants to stop on by and check it out.
