The NEW Permanent Record / Susan Brown, Your Texas Connection, Keller Williams Realty

Your Permanent Record.  Remember that?  I do.  It was frightening.  A permanent record of everything I did in life - especially the stuff that wasn't right.  The wrong stuff.  I can hear my Mom now, "That'll go on your Permanent Record Susan."  Oh the worry that caused.  And I was a good kid.  What about now?  What is the NEW Permanent Record?

How about Facebook?  Or Twitter?  Or You Tube?  I think those NEW Permanent Records are a lot more concrete than the one I faced.  And today it's not only a personal record but it's out there in cyberspace for everyone to see.  And it really doesn't go away.  And you aren't even necessarily inPermanent Record control of the discretions that end up on your own record.

Let's look at a possible scenario.  A young adult who enjoys playing online games, like Mafia Wars or  Farm Town, on Facebook.  They apply for a new job.  The prospective new employer checks out their online presence.  Their Facebook account comes up.  Access isn't as difficult because this person is gathering friends to play the games with - "friends" that this person doesn't really even know but is just using to increase mafia size or build farms.  The prospective new employer is concerned about the amount of time is being spent during the work day on these activities - especially when the new job has very little supervision and is only judged by sales numbers at the end of the month.  Will this young adult be a strong candidate for the job?  Or will the Permanent Record that's being built online have an effect?

Or how about another view - the one where an innocent enough action turns viral.  I know of a high school student who was caught in the act of wrapping a home.  Normally this would be more of a no harm, no foul type activity. However, a "friend" of this kid jumped on Facebook and started a group called "Joey B Gone Wild."  Over 300 people joined the group & it got a lot more involved than the title.  Questionable pictures, actions bordering vandalism & worse were attributed to Joey B.  It took days for it to filter back to his parents.  Eventually though it did and they got it taken off of Facebook.  But what damage was done in the meantime?  What kind of Permanent Record was going on here?

And I can't leave out the Permanent Record I like to call "Reply to All."  I watch my words carefully on email.  After all, once you click send it is gone!  I've had several friends accidentally hit the "reply to all" in error & the consequences haven't been pretty.  One person was trying to reply to his wife's disgust with her boss.  She had forwarded an email missive that had been sent to her.  Well this husband was supportive.  He berated the boss up one side & down the other like a good husband but then he hit "reply to all."  And off went that little email piece to the boss himself.  Needless to say, both husband & wife had some 'splaining to do!  That permanent record isn't lasting but it did cause a lot of discomfort.

I guess the New Permanent Record can do a lot more damage than the one I grew up with.  Although I have the feeling that if I tried to tell a few younger people about being aware of what's out there on their record, I'd get an eye roll & a head shake with a "It's not a big deal," reply.

Susan,

My Mom's voice is always in my head when I do any on-line social media...and I try to watch my words carefully.  You are right to always be cautious.

Susan, as i read this I thought of Sister Mary Leo, a geriatric nun who constantly reminded us of our permanent record.  That was in the sixties, and I have to wonder what she would think of Facebook and Twitter and even Active Rain!  She's probably in heaven or wherever tutting away.

Lori - I know a number of folks don't understand the gravity of social media.  They just see the fun.

Pat - Hah!  I'll bet Sister Mary Leo would have a few words to say on the subject!

Susan great observation, I agree we always have to have our judgement when it comes to online stuff because we are in the business of dealing with the public.

The permenant record of those around us is getting out of control as well. Recently there was a story about a family in New York who didn't get approved for an apartment because the board didn't like the son's FaceBook friends.

Yikes, Susan! I had forgotten The Permanent Record. Those words still make us quake in our boots, don't they? But, it was private and very few people saw it--unlike today's social media posts.

Social Media IS the new permanent record and I find myself reminding by daughter to be careful and smart about what she posts and with whom she is taking pictures.

Hi Susan,  Interesting post.  It seems to me it isn't just a different type of permanent record but rather that it is so available to everyone for whatever reason !

I had forgotten how relevant this was to our new facebook fantatic group.   I came over as a result of Patricia's post.   Would you post it to the group....great stuff!

Pat Kennedy sent me over your way.  The internet is so important in today's world.  It just has my jaw dropping in disbelief at the behavior of some who abuse it with hateful, lewd, etc remarks, pictures and out and out criminal activity.  I agree with Bill's remark as well about how available personal info is for anyone to find.

The permanent record -- I remember it well from my many years with the nuns!!  Once as an adult I did something that made my father especially grateful and he said to me, "there will be some erasures from the Permanent Record because of this..." and it made me smile.

Oh that phrase brings back some really bad memories.

How about wooden rulers on knuckles?

I too had blanked (blotted?) out the permanent record threat, Susan! Thank goodness my high school folded shortly after I left and all those records disappeared...

Mark - I hadn't read that one - wow!

Lottie - Those words certainly held a lot of weight!

Barb - I do the same.  I don't think some of the kids understand the gravity of social media.  They just see the fun stuff.

Bill - The availability is incredible.  And employers are using it as a tool.

Lori - Absolutely.  I need to make sure it is there.

Sue - I also can't believe the language that is used and the private stuff that is shared!

Maureen - The words bring back memories for a lot of us!

Erica - God bless nuns everywhere - they really worked hard at instilling fear & education.

Irene - It is so funny that those words can still strike a chord!
