Flags Fly High at Big Lake (Memorial Day Reflections)

Flag for Memorial Day on Big LakeWe are truly blessed in the Big Lake area to have such amazing community support and involvement in our little rural neighborhood just outside the city limits of Mount Vernon. This past Memorial Day weekend was a prime example of such. One of the unique things that our local Boy Scout Troop in Big Lake does is providing a flag service during major holidays. And although the weather was less than stellar this past weekend, it was such a beautiful sight to not only see Big Lake residents supporting our Boy Scouts but also flying their flags so proudly and abundantly in honor of the men & women who have served in our military. I am so grateful and blessed to live in this wonderful county and truly thankful to all those who have served, protected & sacrificed for our freedoms!

Additionally, I do hope that everyone had a safe and fun nathannakisMemorial Day weekend with family and friends! At the same time, I  hope that we all remembered to take time to honor the true meaning of the weekend by recognizing those who have served our country and most importantly take time to pay tribute to those in which we have lost. For me personally, taking the time to remember my fallen classmate Spec. Nathan Nakis, who graduated with me from Sedro-Woolley High School in 2002.

As a member of the Army National Guard, Nathan was killed while serving in Iraq on December 16th, 2003 when the truck he was driving rolled over.

Nathan had an incredibly beautiful spirit and was one of the most genuine and nicest people you'd ever have the chance to meet. Though small in stature he had one of the biggest hearts of anyone I know. He truly knew no strangers!

And while Nathan is so greatly missed by his family & friends and all those who had the chance to know him; he was a hero and will never be forgotten. We remember you Nathan each and every day!
