Your Most Valuable Asset: Your Reputation

By
Real Estate Sales Representative with Castles Unlimited®

What do world-class athletes, rock stars and Hollywood actors and actresses all have in common?  Their reputations determine the size of their pay checks.  Their public relations "marketing" in a sense is what they all work for.

Some tennis players, golfers, basketball players (for example) are less talented than others but still make 10x the money of their peers because of their public image.  Are you going to be the Tiger Woods of real estate or are you going to be the guy that beats him once or twice and STILL no one knows your name?

I contend that real estate is no different than Hollywood or sports.  The Oscars are essentially given out in real estate too.  They aren't only those shiny trophies that your broker gives you at the awards banquet...the Oscars in real estate are those larger than your competition's commission checks.

So what are you doing today to win your next Oscar?  What are you doing to improve your reputation, build your "box-office draw"?

I suggest that you take a few minutes everyday and meditate on what direction your reputation will be heading in. Just like a bad role in the movies can sink an actor's career...so can taking an over priced listing hurt your career.  Just like a number of loses in the PGA can tarnish a golfer's value to Rolex, your relationships with other Realtors and your community service visibility can either increase or decrease your market value in real estate.

You should work towards many goals, but the one that should be your ultimate focus is the one where you have earned the most respect within your industry and community...in that way I believe you can service your clients better and in doing so earn what you are truly worth in this business.

This is a very important aspect of our trade. This business thrives from word of mouth; no other form of advertising is as longlasting. Thanks for the post!

James - There is no question that your reputation is extremely important. It all boils down to "doing the right thing" in business and in life.

Meditation rocks.  I must say that as I focus on Christ and focus on how I want my life to become, I feel that I'm being directed more and more down that path.  Need purity though.....good post.

Even more valuable than your reputation is your character.  Your reptuation springs from your character.  Work on your character and you will surely have a great reputation.

Five stars for a great post. Unlike working for a large corporation...... we are the corporation. We need to build our own reputation and brand identity. If you don't have a good reputation, you won't last in this business.

The importance of reputation in real estate is most apparent when we run across an individual with a bad reputation.
