We went to a Banquet and a Wedding Broke Out

Actually it's the other way around, we went to a wedding and it turned into a food fest. Most people just love a wedding, the bride and groom, all the people dressed up special, the attendants, everybody is in a festive mood.

This was the wedding of my cousin, actually second cousin. The happy couple are John and Michelle Teixeira. Their wedding was Sat afternoon in Waterbury Ct at 3:00 PM. The wedding party went to nearby Milford, Ct so that they could take photos on the beach.

The reception was to start at 6:00 PM so that left a lot of time for people to kill. Milford Ct is 30 minutes away and the hall that was to host the reception was only 1/4 mile away at teh Portuguese Club.

So what do you do to pass 2 hours waiting for the bride? Well one option was to go into the bar area and watch the world cup game. As this was at a private social club, the bar room was filled and the smoke was so thick that you would have thought it was the London fog.

Nothing to do but go into the social hall and wait.

The hall was filled with tables of food. Not your normal hors d'oeuvres.

This was a very Portuguese wedding fare.

8 tables total loaded with: fried shrimp, chilled shrimp, shrimp cakes, crab cakes, calamari salad, fried calamari, brie, cheese and crackers, prosciutto and melon, prosciutto on bread, a dish of marinated pork and potatoes served with clams, called carne alentejana, a seafood dish from the coast of Portugal

In the middle of these tables was a center table set up with half lobsters tha looked to be at least 1/14 pound lobsters

At the top of the lobster table was a 15 pound lobster that was truly a cool guy with those shades. The food was served for the 2 hours while the wedding party took their photos, and it kept getting replenished. Finish a dish at your table, and the dirty plate was replaced by a clean plate.

The wedding party got back, the formal introductions were made and then the main dish was served.

This was surf and turf with a twist, served family style, rib eye steak with roasted potatoes, shrimp and green beans. This was also continuously replaced, BUT, if you still had a hankering for the appetizers, they were replenished as well on separate tables.

The party went on, time to get to the deserts, again the tables are set up.

All types of fresh made custard and creme cookies and cakes; canolis, creme cakes, flan, fresh fruit, with pineapple, strawberries, several types of melon

There was still the wedding cakes, (3) which were carrot cake, a vanilla cake, and a strawberry cake.

Yes there was a bar, and that stayed pen all night, and the bands (2) kept the place jumping all night.

Not a typcal wedding but the party that wil be talked about for a long time.

Ed, that food looks amazing!  I spent a couple of weeks in Portugal a few decades ago and can still taste the food!  Cheers to the happy couple!
