Election Results

By
Commercial Real Estate Agent with RE/MAX West Realty Inc., Brokerage (Toronto)

I want to let you know that I was unsuccessful in the RECO election, and I would like to thank you for your kind support of my candidacy.

In the end, the incumbent was successful. Only 1 in 20 registrants voted in the election. The successful candidate required 530 votes.

Some candidates had mounted an e-mail campaign. I chose not to, when I found that Constant Contact, a major, reputable e-mail service in the US would not send them out. Technically, they said it would be "spamming".

Instead, I chose to publish my campaign on the internet. On a Google search of "RECO election", I held 8 of the 10 places on the first page. RECO itself ranked #5 and #6.

However, voter turnout was so low, that no one really cared. So, Google results meant nothing.

Nevertheless, the circulation of the material by RECO to almost 60,000 registrants has resulted in a number of good contacts and a number of inquiries and bookings for my RECO Credit Course on Disclosure Laws.

Thanks once again for everyone's good wishes!

Brian -  I am so sorry I did not know you were running!  I actually would have voted for the first time!!!   I will admit that not too many around here pay much attention to the elections.  It is thought that not much will affect our market and that if you don't live in the Toronto area, why bother?  I do apologize for not even bothering to notice who was in the running :(

Susan,

No problem. I think you would be a little too far east. Most people just don't vote, and that's all there is to it.

I was the only person with an actual campaign, platform and political promises. Not that it mattered much in the end.

My intention had been to assist RECO in the Competition Bureau issues.

Brian - I think a lot of the elections are won by name recognition.  Some of the e-mails I got asking for my vote said they were going to try to get RECO do things that were clearly outside of its jurisdiction.

Hi Brian:

I did vote and I am sorry you didn't win.  I hope you try again next year.

Regards,

Marc and Catherine,

I'll have to see what happens over the year. If the Competition Bureau issue is resolved, I may not be interested, but if it is still outstanding then I may run again.

Next time, I really would use an email campaign.

Hi Brian, I think you proved that it's possible to increase your presence on the web so it was a great endeavour.  Maybe it didn't work for elections but it will work for other uses.

Keep doing great things at local level and the time will come for bigger opportunities.

I have a question for you.  With Canadian real estate professionals now beginning to get on the social media bandwagon, there will be plagiarism and copyright issues, as mentioned in a post I did recently because it happened to me.

Do you know lawyers who specialize in this field?  Is this something Boards should be looking at having seminars about?  Your thoughts please???

Jenny -  say it ain't so!!!!!    I like to think that Canadian Realtors are like mushrooms (think about it)  and most can't define social media, in my area at least :0)  Don't destroy my fantasy that those in the know will dominate.

Sorry Brian, I really think you would have made a great choice.  I know I told at least 20 people about you, but according to your stats, that might have translated into only two votes.

People who do not vote should not complain.

Jenny,

I think this is going to become a hot topic. I have my stuff republished daily on other sites. There's attribution, but I would have thought they would seek permission.

Then, there are those who steal the entire article including the picture, and just delete my name and any reference to me. And, you might be quite surprised as to who they might be.

I think the seminars would be a good idea.

There are several lawyers who specialize in this field.

Chris,

Thanks. I have had a number of agents tell me how sorry they were, and that they mailed in their vote for me weeks ago.

And, for those who are reading this but not familiar with the rules, RECO permitted online voting this year only. There were no ballots as there had been in the past. However, the people were being nice, so I thanked them for their support.

Brian

Brian - Sorry you did not make it. Having been involved in several "campaigns" I can tell you that the power of the pen goes a long way in winning or loosing depending on who is doing the penning for who or about who.

Congratulations on putting your name forward Brian. Too bad I couldn't vote from BC.

You may not have received the vote to serve RECO this time Brian, but you've won a lot of supporters who value and appreciate your ability to make real estate law easier to understand.

If the successful candidates are as informed and as humble as you are Brian then RECO will be well served.

Brian - It's a shame the number of people who do not get involved in any way whatsoever you are to be commended for entering the race and actually running a campaign

John and Kathy,

Thanks for the comments and good wishes. If the Competition Bureau issue is still topical next year I will probably try again.
