With Facebook trumping Google as the most viewed website in the U.S., it makes sense that all real estate professionals should take advantage of their services. From building profiles and networking with other people, to developing niche-based Fan Pages to target your local market, Facebook can be a very effective tool in your digital marketing arsenal. But, to leverage the popular social networking service to your best interest, it’s good to know about the kinds of people you are likely to encounter.
Inside Facebook, which I really consider as the unofficially official Facebook blog, posted a variety of demographical profiles on the types of people that are using Facebook during it’s continuous surges in growth. While these figures were last updated in January, they still provide some very solid information on what you can expect from people using Facebook. Have a look at the graphs below to see what I mean.
As we came into 2010, only 40% of Facebook users were 25 years of age or younger, 60% were 26 or older, and nearly 20% were 45+ years of age. Even though Facebook started out as a social network exclusively for college students, the Facebook U.S. population has transformed to be very open across all age groups.
When it comes to gender, it seems like the largest category of people who use Facebook in the United States are women, particularly young adults. In total, women comprise over 56% of the overall Facebook population, which has seemed to be a continuous trend for quite some time.
There were also a variety of other graphs available, but they all related to the growth rates of Facebook within the last month of 2009. To be brief, the statistics indicated that the largest growth was with women ages 18-35 and men older than 55.
