Don't Let The Bad Apples Spoil The Bunch

Bad AppleIn real estate offices across the land and in companies, and organizations and all sorts of teams and even family relationships, you are eventually going to have to confront the bad apples in the mix. Work hard and

Don't Let The Bad Apples Spoil The Bunch.

In nature, in a barrel of good apples, with just ONE rotting apple seated up against the bunch too close, the poisonous effects of that tainted apple will affect the others making them go sour.

So as simple a concept that keeping the bad apple away is, keep these things in mind:

1. What is a bad apple? Anyone that creates a toxic relationship to another or to the team unit. Negativity, poor work habits, lack of discipline, being excessively loud and not listening, superiority attitudes, people who want to UNDERMINE the efforts of others...

2. How do you keep the stench from rotting the cores of the good team? First recognize the bad apples. Then, DISTANCE yourself from them best you can. Even isolate them with other duties from the core team. If you are in a hiring position, get them to improve or get rid of them. They are a drag on your energy and your productivity.

3. Finally, reward good behavior. Behavior in many instances follows rewards, money, appreciation, and accolades. The rotten to the core people will change or leave if they are not getting their warm fuzzies. No bending of the rules or exceptions for the bad apple. Consistency in the rules of the game are critical for all members of a team.

In the end you are creating an environment of appreciation, high productivity, and goodwill for a job well done. Bad apples CANNOT thrive when the bunch is so solidly flavorful.

I love all these comments from the good apples here (good banana for you Karen Anne smile). Thanks for all your thoughtfulness on this subject and stay flavorful out there. Some days it is not easy...

When you focus on your own delivery of quality and quantity for your clients and prospects the lack of good support from others has less meaning.  Bad apples abound and even good apples can go rotten in a toxic atmosphere as you mention, but I think that being singlely minded in your focus to delivery great results each and every day, then you can be one of the good apples for all you come in contact with.

Attitude is really important.  I think sometimes people who need to move on, not because the are bad people but because they have outgrown the position, can create bad attitudes because they are scared to move so they create fiction.  Managers can also create friction by not realizing that they need to encourage people to grow away from them.

We are what we think, but to a large degree we're also who we associate with, so filtering out the bad apples is a good thing.

Gary, Great post.  I love MY HOME OFFICE.  Resolves many issues.  I have little tolerance for the self appointed office"Trollers" who spend most of their time surveying the office for potential gossip they can deliver to the Broker or Administrative staff to feather their position.  I find them petty and demeaning to others for their own benefit.  I never understood why Administrations could not see through such fake, destructive behavior.

Hey Gary, I know a few bad apples and the problem is that they DON"T know they are bad apples.  They can't even smell their own stench. They might be aware that others distance themselves but have no clue why and blame it on the human nature of others or society in general. How sad is that? The way people treat one another is usually reflective of how they are treated. My mother always told me when I was young that if I have a problem with one person it's okay, but if I have a problem with many people then I should ask myself if it's ME.

What a great post.  There certainly are a bunch of bad apples in our local real estate market.  It sometimes feels like an uphill battle dealing with them.

What a well spoken blog- wow!!! So true too - I try to stay away from the bad apples but at the end of the day we sometimes have to work with the bad apples and it's a gr8 feeling if the deal does come together.

Gary,

It's generally rather easy to spot bad apples but many, supervisors and co-workers and others, lack the skills and courage to deal with them effectively.

You know Gary...

I think we'd all really like Carol's Mother. It's very rare that people look inside themselves for the problem. It's so much easier to blame the rest of the world. Accountability is a mystery to so many. It ain't rocket science, now is it? :)
