Maryland Schools Rank #1 Again

Maryland’s public education system ranks first in the nation again this year.

Education Week, the College Board and Newsweek Magazine ranked Maryland #1 for the highest percentage of rigorous high schools in America based on the “Challenge Index” developed by the Washington Post

Teens in library

The “America’s Top High Schools” issue of Newsweek, published last week, listed 98 Maryland high schools among its top 1,622 schools nationwide.  Since Maryland has 185 public schools, this means that 53 percent of our high schools appeared on their list.  (A few other states have more schools on the list, but they have far more schools overall and, therefore, a lower percentage of schools from their state.)

The Challenge Index looks at student enrollment in Advanced Placement (AP), International Baccalaureate, and Cambridge courses and tests.  These are considered to be indicators of good preparation for college, and many colleges and universities give credit for them.

Both high schools attended by children living in Crofton, Maryland (21114), are among the eleven (out of twelve) Anne Arundel County public schools that made the list – Arundel H.S. in Gambrills and South River H.S. in Edgewater.  Nearby Bowie H.S., in Prince George’s County, also made Newsweek’s list of “America’s Top High Schools”.

If you're looking for good schools when you relocate to the D..C. area, you can't go wrong with Maryland - and it's hard to beat Anne Arundel County, where 11 out of 12 schools are in the nation's top 6% of public high schools.

Margaret, schools are such an important factor when deciding to relocate your family.  We chose target communities to move a few years ago based soley on the quality of the schools in the neighborhood, then community ammenities, and then distance to our office.  Yes, I drive sometimes longer than an hour to our office, but it was important for my son to get a quality education that is geared to his learning ability.  I am sure parents will find this information very helpful in planning a move.

Very impressive, especially the 11 out of 12 county. I saw the Newsweek Top High Schools report. Always good to hear about excellence in high school.

Margaret, this sort of school ranking is fabulous.  It's got to make your job so much easier.  Or, with so many fine schools, is it harder to select!?

Good question, Mary Kay - Every school in the market I work is "easy" to sell because they're all good!

Richard - Being in an area where schools are good sure does help make my job "easy"

James - When you get clients relocating for work in DC who really care about schools, you've got two great school systems to refer your clients to - MD and VA.  Too bad DC schools are so awful.

Missy - Funny thing is that our current governor is using this to stake a claim as the "education governor" when he did everything he could to get rid of this school superintendent during his first year in office.

Ed - You're right!  When we moved here, Montgomery County was "the best" in Maryland, but Anne Arundel and Howard County schools outperform Montgomery now that Montgomery is a Casa stronghold with so many folks whose first language is Spanish, not English.

June - We are fortunate to have good schools, aren't we?
