Blueberry Picking Season In Hampton Roads Virginia

The weather is getting warmer and we are sweltering here in Chesapeake, Virginia.  I am not really a fan of the heat, even though I was born in Arizona (yes, it is a dry heat).  But the great thing about the hot weather is that BLUEBERRY picking season is now upon us!

Each year, my sons and I make at least one outing to the blueberry fields to pick our own blueberries, which I then squirrel away at home and enjoy the rest of the year.  We eat fresh blueberries on our cereal, make cobblers with fresh blueberries and serve them with a scoop of vanilla ice cream on top.  I also make my own blueberry preserves.  For those that we can't eat right away, I freeze them in double ziplock bags and pull them out whenever I want throughout the year.  Blueberries are one of those miracle foods that are well known for their antioxident powers so you can never get enough blueberries...unless you are Violet Beauregard in Roald Dahl's famous book about that chocolate factory.

My favorite place to pick blueberries is Pungo Blueberries located at 3477 Muddy Creek Road in Virginia Beach (phone:  757-721-7434).    The fields are open from 7 am to 7 pm on Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday.  Blueberry bushes have no thorns and they are a great place for even the youngest children to try their hand at picking their own produce.

See you in the fields!

I used to go to a place in Maryland that was fabulous for pick your own blueberries.  It was Butler's Orchard.  My oldest (now thirteen) ate about a fifth of what we picked.  It is one I can definitely recommend.  Butler's is located in Germantown MD.  Not too far from you!
