Tornadoes and Severe Weather ~ Are You And Your Love Ones Going To Be Safe?

storm damage, Logan Martin Lake SalesAccording to Wikipedia  there was 1,156  confirmed tornadoes in the United States in 2009.  It is sad to say that 21 people lost their lives during these storms.  The death toll from tornadoes is down due in part to public awareness on the safety procedures to take during severe weather. As you know Pell City, St Clair County and the Logan Martin Lake area has it share of tornadoes and severe weather warnings.  Are you doing all that you can to make sure you and your love ones are going to be safe?

We all need to educate ourselves on safety procedures before these violent storms form in order to protect ourselves and our families.

•1.      The National Weather Safety Guide tells us that one of the most important things you can do to protect yourself and your family is to stay alert to any weather changes.  Most people who are killed or injured are uninformed and unaware of what is coming their way.

•2.      Have a plan in place for your family before the storm season starts and practice it frequently.  Go to the basement and get under the stairwell or a heavy piece of furniture.  If you don't have a basement, go to the center of the home on the lowest level in a small room.  Put as many walls between you and the storm as possible.

•3.      Know your county and listen to all of the warnings on the tracks of these storms so you will know when to take cover.  Do not try to outrun a storm in a car.  Leave the vehicle and find shelter.  Being outside during any storm is dangerous.

•4.      Make sure you have batteries for your NOAA Weather Radio.  Treat the radio as you do your smoke detectors (change the batteries each time the time changes).  This habit could save your life.

•5.      Have an emergency storm kit, complete with batteries, a battery powered radio, extra money, bottled water, flashlights, medication, canned foods, blankets, and a first aid kit.

Stay informed.  Read all the severe weather and safety tips on the National Weather Service Website or the FEMA Websites.  We have all heard these tips before but staying informed could save you and your family's life.

Know the Fujita Scale so you will know how severe the storm is that is coming towards you and your family.

Lots of great information.  We are at the mercy of mother nature... and tornados are very scary.  It is important to have a safety plan.

Good advice, Diane, especially at this time of year.  The Fujita Scale is something I never heard of before.
