Do Not Pass Go -- Do Not Collect 2000 Points

Visions of iPads taking flight blurred my vision as my promised 2000 points segued indecently over to The Winnersomeone else's blog.  Bursts of light, screaming into the night sky celebrated our nation's birth and my despair.  Just moments before I sat smiling in front of my computer, happily putting the finishing touches to my review of Soci@l.  It was, if I say so myself, a compilation in perfect prose of my clear understanding of the intended message of the wonderfully written eBook I was challenged to read.

If only, I started to think as I tried desperately to find the page full of words that leapt off my computer screen and into cyberspace.  "It couldn't be gone," I told myself as one does when their car is stolen from a well remembered place on the street.  "I must have just accidentally brought up another window," I ventured as I began a labored and futile search.  I was proud of myself just before that instant, frozen in time, when all hope was lost.  It was not even 11:00 and the deadline was midnight.  I had time to spare.  I was mentally patting myself on the back, never stopping to think that my nasty habit of procrastination was the real culprit.  Yes, it was devastating to lose all my hard work to a momentary blip in the world of technology, a world I thought I loved.  But now I was beating myself up for allowing this to happen.  Why didn't I hit draft and save it?  Ultimately because I was tired and the "draft auto-saved" kept assuring me I was fine and my story was safely tucked away, awaiting launch into the rain.

My mistake, and one that cost me some sleep last night.  After I finally left my personal pity party and called it a night,I recognized there had to be a bigger lesson in this for me.  It was ultimately not about the 2000 points or the possibility of winning an iPad, tempting though both were.  It was more about the lessons in the book.  It was about putting yourself out there for all to see, in a way that made you real and approachable and built your brand.   I needed to be doing this for the right reasons, abandoning WIIFM, so here I am, naked for the world to see, beginning once again.

Oh, and BTW, I will rewrite that review, not for the reward it will bring me but for the epiphany it might create for someone else.

Geri ... I look forward to the review!  The post was great in and of itself ... and I'm guessing, it was a thumbs up review!

Hi Geri - I had to laugh (sorry) when I read this, because I have lost posts that I thought were auto-saved too.  After gnashing of teeth, the only thing to do is to start over and hope that the rewrite is even better than the first draft.

If you use firefox, you can get the free scribefire add-on that you can pull up on any site and write your blogs or comments or whatever, then move them into your blog when they are in their final version.  Scribefire also allows you to change fonts, colors and print sizes without knowing any code, and I love it.  And I never lose my posts. They stay on scribefire until deleted.

Geri I had no idea there was a contest going on, and last night, after a rough day, I sat down with a cocktail and wanted to read some interesting blogs and all I could find, one right after another, were  reviews of Soci@l............. I thought I'd lose my mind and wrote a nasty post...............now had I known about the contest I may not have written it.............ah, who am I kidding, I would have, that's just the kind of guy I am.

This post is beautifully written, you always make your points so eloquently.  Hope you managed to get some free fun time this weekend.

Susan, I tried to get scribefire and it wouldn't work.  I tried it on two different laptops, one with Vista, the other with Windows 7.  I don't remember what the issue was but I'll give it another try.  The frustration was incredible when I watched the post go poof.  There was no way I could recreate it in less than an hour, probably about 35 minutes by the time I stopped searching for the errant article. :)  And why is it the best ones always get away?

Roger, I should have shared that drink with you last night.  Maybe I would have felt better.  Wish I'd seen your nasty post.  Now I'll have to go search for it.  As for fun time, not so much, unless you consider trying to resurrect dead grass with too little water too late a fun escapade, or shopping at the mall for my decorating clients in 99 degree weather.  I had all I could do not to jump in their pool when I got to their house.  Maybe next time.

Yikes, doesn't sound like so much fun.  The cocktail did settle me down a bit.  I hate all this technology stuff................

Technology is supposed to make our lives easier but I'm pretty sure it just makes them more stressful.
