that drawer...

Earlier today I was struggling to find a close pin that I absolutely positively knew was in the junk drawer in my kitchen. I dug through the piles of clutter and random odds and ends, but to no avail. This afternoon I opened my inbox and there was an email from Real Simple on none other than THE junk drawer. Wow. It's Fate. Thus, I decided it would probably be a great idea for me to reach out to all you fellow owners of "THE drawer." You know what it is. Where it is. Not exactly what's in it, but you know exactly what I'm talking about. No more hiding behind that organized facade. Let's get it out there and conquer it together. Here are a couple steps that can maybe save us all from certain disorganization.

1. Take everything out. We've all tried the old trick of pulling it into the corners that seems like it would save time. It doesn't.

2. Sort, sort, sort. Spread it all out and think to yourself, "Have I used this in the past year?" If your answer is no, trash it. If it is, "No, but I might need it," trash it. Maybe watch an episode of TLC's show "Hoarders" to get in the mood.

3. Attempt to organize the contents. Take out the things that have a more appropriate home, and use jars, bags, etc to put the remaining pieces of "treasure" (no more trash, so what remains must be treasure?) in.

4. Put it back. Do this in a way that makes sense to you. And also that makes your heart happy as you open the drawer. There's no harm in having a cute junk drawer.

So there you have it. Take it or leave it, but in the world of organization, always remember that you have to throw things out to realize what you really like.

That was funny but true.  Sometimes we make discoveries in the process of cleaning house of our past.

I love to declutter. So liberating. Before I put anything away and every time I sort through things, I ask, how is this serving me? If it is not or it is negative it goes right on to Freecycle or donated to those at church who need it more than me. Katerina

James, I was going to start de-cluttering, right after I took that course about procrastination.  I kept putting if off, though.

James, to sort and toss is not in your genes. I think Grandma and Papaw had everything they had ever purchased. Now their kids are having to figure out what to do with it. The huge garage sale changed my mind about keeping stuff but it's hard to do.
