Shoppers don’t have to rush to the Sobeys store opening Thursday in Hollick Kenyon. They have all day since it’s one of the retailer’s new 24-hour supermarkets. The company is opening several all-day stores in Edmonton after successfully testing the concept in Mill Woods and Winnipeg, said spokesman Mike Lupien.

“We’ve been seeing in those two test stores a steady increase in the amount of traffic we’ve been getting after midnight,” Lupien said. The 24-hour stores appeal to shift workers and mothers who can shop after their children are put to bed, Lupien said. There are now 25 24-hour stores of 159 in the company’s west region, including northwestern Ontario, Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Alberta and eastern British Columbia.

The 39,000-square foot store at 5119 167th Ave. is a full-service outlet with a new-style layout that clusters fresh food together. “If you just wanted fresh, you could shop one half of the store and you could be gone,” Lupien said.
