Excessive funding of children's wants: The true cause of our federal deficit

By
Real Estate Agent with HomeSmart Realty West CalBRE #01458572

Why?Contact Jim Frimmer for all your San Diego real estate needsI've never had children — never wanted children — so maybe I'm not the proper person to speak on how to raise children.

However, maybe I can phrase child rearing in terms of our federal deficit, which currently is somewhere around $12 trillion, give or take a few trillion dollars.

I think child rearing in America is the cause of our federal deficit. To wit, our children here in America seem to be spoiled kids who then turn into spoiled teenagers who then turn into spoiled adults. Excessive funding of a child's wantsParents try to appease their children by giving them anything and everything they want, and when the parents are no longer around, or no longer financially able to give them anything and everything they want, the look to Government for those free handouts.

Is there any other nation where children get what they want when they want it? Perhaps if parents spent less time searching for the best price on the next newfangled gadget and taught their children to use their imagination and creativity, those same children would grow up creating and imagining good things for our society that we can then sell to other people and other nations. Just a thought.

As long as we have a culture where people want more than they give, who produce less than they consume, we'll be living in deficit times.

Your premise would have merit if universally applied to America in general and not just the children, IMHO.

But I do not want to get into a history lecture or lesson...sadly, however, that attitude has been a part of the American ethos since before the Republic was born...

When teaching at my private college it was easy to point out the student parking lot. That was where all the nice new cars were. The faculty lot resembled something out of Sanford and Son!

Hi Jim-

"As long as we have a culture where people want more than they give, who produce less than they consume, we'll be living in deficit times."

That's a powerful thought and I do think that we are spoiling not only ourselves (as a nation), but our children.  Our kids (all grown now), are remarkable people, but they were raised very differently from some of their contemporaries...

We don't need "it all", AND we certainly should start redefining "all"

Jim......Interesting analogy between spoiled kids and the deficit!  I do agree that in many cases parents give their children too much of everything but love.  Teaching the value of money is a key component to raising children.

Jim,

You're on a roll tonight. I especially like Doug's comment about the student parking lot. It's true.

Hey, everyone!

Thanks for stopping by and commenting.

I've been very busy, but today I'm trying to follow up on these older posts like this one to see if anyone had any questions or if I really need to respond to anyone's comments.

I will read all the comments and respond to any that need a response, but rather than making comments here in my post to each and every one of you, I'll just let everyone know that I have read all the comments and if there are any questions, I'll answer those in comments below this one. Otherwise I'll simply post this comment and then head over to your blogs soon to visit and do some reading and commenting. I hope you'll have a nice welcome mat out for me!

Don't forget to let your cat come out to play with all the other ActiveRain kitties. Your cat-friendly dogs can come, too!

If you need a great cat book, get yourself a copy of Peg Silloway's The Cat Lover's Book of Days.

Hope all is well with everyone.

William - We have to start somewhere. The adults are already into their I-want-it-all mode and the government is willing. We have to start with the children. Everything starts with the children. Raise them wrong and you're going to have problems down the line.
