What makes a great agent?

What makes a great agent?

Don't you have someone told you at least one of these before:

  • it is not hard to be a real estate agent, and they can do it, too?
  • you can't be a good real estate agent, you won't make it in real estate?
  • you get into real estate at the wrong time?
  • you are not tricky enough to be a real estate agent?
  • you have nothing better to do than selling real estate?
  • since you are making zillion of dollars, they are also going to be a real estate agent?
  • you are just lucky of doing good in real estate? not because of your hard work?
  • how hard can it be, you are just showing a few houses and get paid already?
You are a great agent because despite of all these negative comments you get from others, you stay focus and work your behind off and prove it to all of them who don't think you will make it.  And you made it!!  You sweated under the hot sun, you froze like a popsicle in the cold cold wind while showing homes.  You learn and learn to be a great agent, you use your knowledge and experience to help your client to achieve their real estate goal.  Getting a good pay check at the end of course is great, but you won't give up until you solve the problem for your clients so they can close.

What makes a great agent?

I think what makes an agent great is two things...

 1. adapting to change (change in the market and change in how you market and

2. ability to communicate (with clients, attorneys, title agents, loan officers ect... you can't fix the problem unless you can talk about it)

Tammy, I am all for #2, no communication, no result.  I also agree flexibility is the way to survive in life in general, I have seen so many others either their way or no way, will not work things out is a no no to me.

Rita, I think you have to have patience, compassion, passion, and a thick skin lol.  Not in any particular order though.

If you don't like people you shouldn't be in this business or any customer service business.

I feel if someone has passion for their job, no matter what it is, it shines through.

Oh and one other thing. - You better know what the heck you are talking about.

Jenny, yep, we better know our stuff.  When you are an honest person, and willing to work and help, people will notice that.  When you do things right, right things will follow.

Rita, the first step to being a successful agent is not listening to negativity from those who might be jealous and say you won't make it in real estate because it's too hard.  There are many professions that are difficult.  Real estate is a people business and it's knowing, or if an agent doesn't know they can learn, how to help people achieve their real estate goals, whether buying or selling.

Real estate is a hard field. There are many really successful real estate agents telling me that they wanted to quit real estate every day. We always have to have strong affirmations to get us through the negativity.

Two attributes I look for in an Agent are (and the drum roll please):

Tenacity and Good Listening Ears

Pamela, it takes a strong focused person to stay in real estate, if we don't know how to lead, we will never get ahead.  Real estate is really not for weak stomach people.

Song, it is.  We have to block all those negative comments out, just keep doing what we are supposed to do and try to excel at least.

Liz, you are right about that !

Rita, Thank you for the post. It takes patience to be a buyer's agent and great marketing skills to be a listing agent. You need great  negotiation skills too.

Gita, No doubt, they are all important to be a great agent.  No patience can not stay in this business, haha.

David, oh yes, follow up is the key in this business.  Thanks!
