Clear That Clutter!

clutterClear That Clutter!

This is a really easy and much less painful way to de-clutter.  This is all about changing your focus so that you can focus on what you do want rather than what you don't want.

Why do we accumulate clutter?

  • because we like things
  • have emotional attachment to things
  • think that we may need these things again
  • get busy and don't have time to sort through things
  • we like to collect things
  • we are saving these things for someone else

There is is theme here and it is things and how you think about them.  Change how you think and you will change how you behave.  People are important not things.

The best way to deal with clutter is to remove absolutely everything, I mean everything.  Then, focus on what you want and like and put it back...keep adding until you feel like it is enough.   It is funny that sometimes, you don't really want to add anything back, but you have to for others.

Try it a few times, start small dump out your desk drawer - or that junk
clutter in office drawer in the kitchen.  Sometimes, if you can't find things you wind up buying another one - so what is the point of saving something in case you "might" need it someday...pass it on today to someone who does and go back to the thrift store and get it when  you actually need it.

Focus on What you Want - Not on What you Don't Want!

You have hit on a key component of preparing to sell your house. The other key - cleanliness!

Hi Yvette,

I just read another one about "clutter" and commented on it also.  I don't understand why sooo many homeowners that want to sell their home for "TOP $$" don't understand the concept about putting things "out of site, out of mind" to give the potential buyer a reason to picture their own stuff at the home on the market....  We need to educate, educate, educate the public, so they have the potential to receive TOP $$$.   ;>))

Gary you are right, clean and uncluttered!

Ann-Marie it is living condition vs showing condition.

Norma, It feels so much less stressful when everything is clean and put away, and yes, I know it takes time to put things away, but it also takes time to find things if they are not put away.

I personally love to declutter.  It feels so good to get rid of stuff I no longer use or need.

I like your perspective of looking at the task from a positive rather than perspective.

I do minor declutters on the first Saturday of each month and major declutters on the first Saturday of every sixth month. My wise old grandmother taught me that if I haven't used it in six months, sell it or donate it.
