Maine Homeschooling & The Adventures of Super Quinn

Maine Homeschooling

learning all the timeEver wonder what homeschooled kids do all day?  Why, write comic books of course!

Here in Maine, homeschooling is quite well accepted and the state, while providing oversight, does not make it difficult for parents.  Maine homeschool regulations and guidelines can easily be met, while not becoming burdensome to parents who choose to homeschool their children.

My office is only 2 miles from my home, so I come home everyday for lunch.  Today I was greeted by my son, Quinn, sitting on the front stoop surrounded by paper and markers and busily creating comic books of his favorite super hero, "Super Quinn."

I couldn't resist filming a video of him reading one of his creations to save for the video portfolio I am compiling of this year's activities.  Apparently the neighborhood kids had to go inside for a while and he chose to make the most of this respite.

I hope you enjoy!

If your family is committed to homeschooling, or as in our case "radical unschooling," and you are tired of your state's restrictive regulations, you might consider coming to Maine.  I'd be happy to help you find your niche here in Maine.

That's great that he is so focused and independent! I help my kids a lot, especially because one is challenged, but no way could I homeschool. But hat's off to those who can!

Kristen, Great video, and I think I detected an MLS sheet in the comic book.  Junior agent training already??

Ellen: I think that counts as homeschooling too:)  You just have it supplemented by regular school as well.

Charles;  Yes, I love the incredible joy children can experience, and we get to experience through them.

Roger:  He was a little flustered when he realized that he put it together backwards, but then he just said "Oh well."  Oh well was the first thing we taught him to say.  He used to get so frustrated when he couldn't do something perfectly the first time.  He's much more carefree now.

Liz & Bill:  You are correct, except not about the agent in training part.  Nothing goes to waste.  I'm in charge of the recycling for my office, so I have an endless supply of paper for Quinn.  For a while he thought that all paper came with something printed on one side of it.  As of this week, he wants to be a police officer, an artist, a singer, and build cars.

Good point!  I hope he never feels that he has to pick just one.  There is nothing wrong with just being.  My mother once asked him what he wanted to be when he grows up and he simply said "Me, just bigger."

"Oh well" is such a great attitude to have at his age.............he will never need to be in therapy!  What a delightful little man!  Reading your last response just made me cry.........what an amazing thing for him to say "me, just bigger"..............he's special!

Found this blog almost by accident, but loved your description of radial unschooling.  I'm an accidental radical unschooler...at least, I think I am.  All these labels!  LOL

Please share more about what radical unschoolers do all day!  :)

thewhitewombat?  Intriguing name.  Basically radical unschoolers do whatever they would like to do all day.  We simply provide the environment rich in possibilities and full of tools and supplies and he chooses what he would like to do.  Feel free to email me, I always love to talk about unschooling.  Also, for more info you can check out http://sandradodd.com/.  Sandra Dodd is one of the gurus of unschooling.
