The Houston Area

As someone whom originally relocated to Houston, Texas with a very helpful Corporate Relocation Package and a very unhelpful Realtor (which is a whole other story), I've been consistently excited and surprised at the beautiful homes in varying price ranges that this city has to offer.  It took me time to sort out a cool-in-town neighborhood from a planned community, and a planned community from a Sub-Division.  But with Houston architecture encompassing styles from retro mid-century homes that make you want to go for a spin in your '57 Chevy, to amazing Traditional Brick homes that beg you to prepare a beautiful pot roast and have the entire family join you around the table, to Beautifully Landscaped Mediterranean Homes that invite you to don a swimsuit and spend the day gazing out at your pool or even better, spend the day floating in it.  These are the homes that make Houston so wonderful and so unique.

And while Houston's architecture is wonderful, the location is even better.  One can visit the beautiful beach communities of Kemah and Galveston in less than an hour.  With the breathtaking views, wonderful restaurants and sense of small towns - they are wonderful afternoon get-aways (and even better week-end getaways).  The shopping is in par with any other major city, offering such stores including Neiman-Marcus, Saks Fifth Avenue, Macys, Dillards, Crate and Barrel, Restoration Hardware, nestled in smaller Town Square type malls to the large malls such as the Galleria and Memorial City.

And if you are interested in Golf, the Houston area has more golf courses than one can imagine - from exclusive private courses to wonderful, hearty more affordable golf clubs to readily accessible public courses.  There is something for everyone and judging from my husband and his friends, it's as fun to jump around and experiment at the different courses, as it is to experience the camaraderie, and friendship offered from joining a private club.  This I know, because although I get our Golf Club Membership bill every month, I see many different Golf Club charges on our credit card bill because he wanted to go golf with "Joe" at his club.  And if golf isn't your thing, Tennis is extremely popular in Houston and as with Golf, there are many clubs available to work on your game.

In the 60's, a number of developers created the idea of a  "master-planned community."  These Master-Planned Communities are like perfect Villages that were created in a Developer's Mind.  There tends to be a theme and the strict regulations and deed restrictions help keep the vision and the community intact. Most of these communities offer amenities such as recreation areas pools, golf courses and ballparks, beautiful landscaping, trees and greenbelts, community centers, and educational facilities and recreation areas such as pools, ballparks and golf courses surrounded by all of the conveniences such as lakes, water, schools, shopping centers and restaurants.  These communities are found in the areas surrounding Houston and include Conroe, Copperfield, Jersey Village, Katy, Kingwood, League City, Missouri City, Pearland, Sugar Land and The Woodlands, among others.

Robyn:  I'm from Houston - actually born in Dallas - but call Houston home and I enjoyed reading your posts about Houston.  Anytime I fly into Houston, my heart starts racing because it is truly a city on the move!  Houston is an amazing city!  I have so many fond memories spending afternoons at Baxters in the Montrose area (100 yrs ago), to dinner at the Cadillac Bar and all the other wonderful places we use to hang out in our youth!

I left Houston 13 yrs ago when I married.  I never really left the state - how can you leave something so embedded in you.  You don't!  A Texan never leaves home - we take it with us in our hearts and souls.
