Top 10 Lessons From My 1st Year Blogging

First I had to ask myself: Why did I learn the lessons and what motivated me to blog?

My one year anniversary with blogging on ActiveRain will be August 22, 2010.  I have learned so much fromBlast so many people it is hard to express my gratitude for the help.  This will be my 193rd post and my new goal is to post #200 on August 22rd.  You will see a lot of posting from me in the next 10 days and I will try and keep it content rich!

What motivated me to set that arbitrary goal?  It is the addiction to writing and engaging with people from all over the country!  That is what motivates this blogger. My personal mission is to help people one at a time so if one reader learns something that can help them be better at anything.. I feel like "mission accomplished. "Motivation or inspirations" comes daily from the things we experience and feel.  I think the feeling aspect of the emotions creates the motivation to write and share thoughts about a specific experience which when expressed in a blog post might make a difference in some way.

In the beginning the motivation was all about getting better, learning to format and have the presentation look better.  I go back and laugh at the baby steps of a beginning blogger.  I am not going to change them because it is an example of how the evolution of a blogger takes place.  We all have to practice to get better so blog history should show progress in my humble opinion.  Then, as I started to get more points and see people write about getting 100,000 points, my personal bar was set for that goal.  Moving forward the badges under the names were a new form of motivation. My new bar is 200 posts in 1 year.  That is my own motivation. I don't know if that is good or bad for a first year blogging but I never thought I would be posting that much and I am excited that I did.

It all started with Anna "Banana" Kruchten.  Anna saw an article I did with More.com posted on linkedin.  She asked me if I was with ActiveRain and I said "no but I have seen some of my Realtor friends there" and knew I should be and so that was that and I was on my way in ActiveRain.  First, I copied what others were doing and I learned that is not always right... I stepped in some Cow Pies, had to dust myself off and move on.  I had no clue how to add a picture, how to embed a video or create a link.  I learned it all on ActiveRain with reading and help from the wonderful people. If you get an opportunity to go to a raincamp, I suggest you go and connect with other participants in this wonderful community!  You will really learn how blogging fits together with social media.  I have more to learn but for my first year, I am happy with the lessons so far.

A big thank you to each and everyone who commented on my very first post!  For someone starting new the response from the comments sets the tone for the AR experience and you rang my chimes....  Ed Silva, Cindy Jones, Rebecca Gaujot, Yvette & Dennis Gordy, Tim & Pam Cash, Mary Yonkers, Jean Terry, Renee Burrows, Kathy Clulow, Teri Eckholm, Barb Szalo, Keith Elliott Jr. Sylvie Conde, Irene Kennedy, Jenny Kotulak, Troy Trumm, Williams James Walton, Jason Rose, Beth Larson.

Top 10 lessons in my first year blogging?

  1. Find your own cyber voice and some comfortable groups to connect with.
  2. Don't step in "cow pies" take the high road on comments.
  3. Post information that is content rich.  The information needs to be of value to the reader.
  4. Read what top producers are posting and follow their lead. Don't worry about comments.
  5. Don't get caught up in drama.
  6. Realize that sometimes people post things that are all "cow pies" for effect and just ignore it.
  7. Give unconditionally and be honest.
  8. Know that you will make mistakes but build a bridge and move on when it happens.
  9. Don't let yesterdays post take your joy today .
  10. Keep learning something new every single day!

I know this sounds corny.. but I do want to thank each and everyone who reads what I write, takes the time to comment or post in the Cosmic Cow Pie group.  I cherish what I have learned from all of you and look forward to moving further into the 21st century together!

You all "Rock My Blog World"  and I sincerely appreciate our connections! This really is a wonderful community where people care about each other.

We all have different motivators. Mine has never included the acquisition of "points badges" and I can assure you this community will never see a post from me, tooting my horn or patting myself on the back for reaching the 100K mark. That just seems... shallow.

I don't encourage others to set a blog-writing target based purely on numbers: number of points achieved, number of posts made. All too often when such is the case, content falls off because it's written with the purpose of achieving numbers. I'd rather a person set an achievable goal allowing for sufficient time to create a post worthy of reading on a subject worthy of sharing.

As for the "Top 10" lessons you might consider striking #4 and simply encourage one to write from the heart. I've read content from "AR Top Producers" and many are ill-placed in that category. I'm not a big supporter of herd mentality; be creative, be unique, be yourself.

These are great tips for a blogger.  There are going to be disagreement and everyone will not always be nice.  It is important to always be professional and keep your eye on the ball.  Great advice, thanks!

Carra - Congratulations!  That is a huge accomplishment for a 1st year in blogging...I should know since my 1st anniversary is in October and I'm nowhere close.  I stopped by to pick up some tips and get myself more involved in blogging, instead of just the "safe harbor" of reading and commenting.  Thanks so much for the informative post!

The only point I disagree with is 4: Read what top producers are posting and follow their lead.

I really see that as a contradiction to 1, which I strongly agree with: Find your own cybervoice. A cybervoice isn't just the way you express yourself (casual, free-flowing, formal, whatever), but it's found in content, too. Someone else may be a great blogger--or a great Realtor--but have an entirely different voice, an entirely different focus.

With around 200 posts, you're obviously doing many things right. But keep your blog and your voice your own.

Congratulations on that little gold star. I wish I was good at writing sentimental posts but it's just not in my makeup. Right now it seems that I'm on the bad side of the ActiveRain gods, but I'm just going to keep on keeping on.
