If You Negotiate For a Living Is It Something You Do All The Time

We are Realtors and as such we negotiate for a living, it's pretty much what we do constantly, day in and day out.  If you are negotiating for business are you someone who negotiates in your personal life.  I negotiate with my kids, have since they were little, but they don't know.  I am so skilled at it that they think it is their idea.  I will negotiate with the vendors in NYC and also at a flea market, it makes my daughter squirm but I almost feel like it is part of the game.

Some places don't seem to lend themselves to negotiating.  The Gap is a prime example.  Today I had a flat tire and I had to go to Mavis Tire in town to get it fixed and put back on my car.  A couple came in (he had on a shirt that said stay 100 feet back on the back, that should have been a give away)  He inquired about a new tire, was quoted a price and then said can you do better.  Come on, it's a twenty-two year old kid working the counter.  The kid said it was the price and then the stay 100 feet back says well do you give discounts to firemen.  I am biting my tongue.  Listen chubby 60 something, I know you are not running into burning buildings, stop trying to trade in on the NYC Firemen.  Even the young man behind the counter knows that if you run anywhere you will have a heart attack.  No firemen here, all in agreement raise your hand.

So do you negotiate all the time or do you save it for the big stuff?

We have real estate that is fairly, realistically priced and some are shocked when the price is the price. One fellow said he had never paid full price for anything in his life. Had to keep from smiling on a lakeshore property that was just listed that he zeroed in on that I knew would not last. And I did not tell him today was an historic day for him where to own this one, he would have to belly up to the bar and plop down the sale price asked. He did not elect to at first and when he did return, we had multiple buyer situation because it was realistically priced and it ended up selling higher due to the excitement of buyers waiting for just this type of property to come on the market. Too many buyers assume sellers are ready to be foreclosured on, upside down when they own the property outright. And to buy it, there is no negotiation, no wiggle room.

Well i would say I negotiate all the time. I work more than I play because of a few decisions I made when I was younger. so I would say I negotiate all day long every day. I am not a fireperson haha
