What is the most popular fruit in the world?

I could give you a hint by putting the name of an ActiveRain member right here, but I'm pretty sure that would give it away.

Here are some interesting tidbits though:

  • The variety you eat today (Cavendish) is not the one that your grandparents used to eat (Gros Michel).
  • The Gros Michel variety is effectively extinct, ravaged by Panama disease.
  • The Cavendish variety was original thought to be resistant to Panama disease, but it turns out that it is not, and the Cavendish variety is slowly but surely being ravaged by a new strain of Panama disease.
  • The best hope for the Cavendish variety is genetic engineering. Unfortunately, genetically engineered foods are banned in many parts of the world.

This is interesting.....I honestly have no idea, but I am going to guess OH I KNOW! (it just hit me from your first hint!) Since I am the first guess, I am not going to blow it! But I do know the AR member is in Phoenix!

Most fruits are indigenous to a relatively localized area but since bananas or some variation (plantains?) grow pretty much in all of the tropical world that would be my guess!

You know I never gave much thought to the variety of bananas, but when you said Gros Michel I remembered my Grandfathers fruit stand.  Thanks for bring that out of almost lost memories for me.

Hi Jim, I heard that somewhere about the cavendish being the banana we eat today -- probably Alton Brown on the food channel.

Those diseases are probably why we are starting to see other varieties of bannanas coming into grocery stores more and more.

Hi Jim - What would be do without bananas?  Interesting ost, and I hadn't realized that the formerly popular bananas were extinct.  Hope the current ones don't follow suit!

Wow Jim, you even stumped Anna Banana!  I didn't know any of the banana variety names, but I do know that there are lots of different varieties, and that the flavors actually do vary.  It would be good if we had a greater variety of bananas here in the U.S.

Hi Jim ~ Ha! I have a banana every morning but clearly don't know my varieties. I thought you were talking about apples. Couldn't think of who was named after an apple here though one of my coworker's kids is named Apple.

Based on a report I read in the Dallas Morning News that WalMart sells more bannanas then any one in the world.  I would have to quess that is the answer.

It may be bananas, but my favorite fruit by far is a mango.

i had no clue there were actual varieties of banannas.  I thought a bananna was a bananna.  Of course, I am old enough to know that nothing is that simple.

Hey, everyone!

Thanks for stopping by and commenting.

I'm trying to follow up on these older posts like this one to see if anyone had any questions or if I really need to respond to anyone's comments.

I will read all the comments and respond to any that need a response, but since this post is rather old, rather than making comments here in my post to each and every one of you, I'll just let everyone know that I have read all the comments and if there are any questions, I'll answer those in comments below this one. Otherwise I'll simply post this comment and then head over to your blogs soon to visit and do some reading and commenting. I hope you'll have a nice welcome mat out for me!

Don't forget to let your cat come out to play with all the other ActiveRain kitties. Your cat-friendly dogs can come, too!

If you need a great cat book, get yourself a copy of Peg Silloway's The Cat Lover's Book of Days.

Hope all is well with everyone.

Richard - That's interesting about Wal-Mart selling the most bananas. I have never seen a banana at any of our Wal-Marts here.

Endre - Apparently there aren't that many that are commercially available. The Cavendish has something like 99% of the market share.
