Lizards have followed me to Maryland

By

It is no secret that I am petrified of lizards.  I have a clinically diagnosable phobia (and that's my professional opinion).  Usually this only becomes a problem when I going home to visit my parents in Jamaica or my sister-in-law in Florida.  Luckily we don't have lizards in Maryland - or so I thought!

The first time I realized that there were lizards in Maryland was just over 2 years ago in a vacant house in Southern Maryland.

Until recently I thought that it was a fluke.  However, I am beginning to see them more and more.  On a vacation in Williamsburg there were several on the patio of the hotel.

This week we've seen a lizard outside my garage, i've seen one running along the side of my friend's house, and today I almost had a heart attack when one ran into the garage of a house I was previewing in Beechtree, Upper Marlboro.

Where were all these lizards hiding for the past 18 years?  Why have they chosen now to haunt me?

Has anyone else seen an increase in these nasty creatures running around?

I thought I had moved far enough North to not have to live with the fear of finding a lizard in my house.  I am beginning to realize that Maryland is not far enough.

Canada here I come!

I'm that way about spiders, but I think lizards are very cute and I talk to them when I see them.  I don't even mind snakes, however I would be a bit concerned to find one in my house.  Then again, I love most creatures (poor spiders are alone on my list of those I am terrified of).  My mother found a snake in a storage shed and called me to come take care of it!  I had to explain that while I am not afraid of pet snakes or snakes in general, I certainly don't know enough about them to come randomly pick them up.  My grandmother found a baby snake (she lives downstairs from me) and called me to come see it.  I said, "Oh, isn't it so cute," as it made its way under the deck.  She, of course, had expected me to get rid of it or kill it.  Sorry Grandma!

Lizards in Maryland... no way!  I lived in Mexico and we had geikos all around the house and while they did eat the mosquitos, I never quite got used to them hanging around.   ~ Susan

I am sorry to learn about your phobia and fear. I hope someday it will not bring anxiety in your life.

I love lizards. My cats spend a good part of the day watching lizards do push ups on one of our decks under the blue sky. The pup will tend to chase them when she spots one or boof at them but they always scurry under a moss rock or race off with their long tail following behind. For me, seeing a lizard is always good fortune and nothing to fear. Althought I lived on Capitol Hill fin DC for 25 years prior to migrating to Santa Fe, NM - I never encountered any lizards. Climate must be changing.

Chris - I cannot imagine seeing lizards as cute.  I'm not fond of spiders either.

Susan - that's how they are in Jamaica.  I hate them running around the house (i'd rather have the mosquitos).

Emily - I suspect I will need therapy for the phobia to go away.  I didn't think the lizards could survive the winters here in DC.  I hope you are right that seeing the lizards means good fortune.

Are you serious, Stacey? Really??? Oh, my. That's something you have to either get over or deal with. You don't have to like them, but moving all the way to Canada isn't an option ;-)

Stacy, I feel about snakes as you dowith lizards. And I know I can never out run snakes, they are everywhere. Lizards I don't have a problem with, the little gecko guys that I see when I am down in Florida are so cute. Minnesota may be safe, I haven't seen any lizards here!

Too funny Stacey Ann though I know it is not funny to you. Yes we have them here as you are finding out. They move quick and are harmless and I even have one hanging around my house this year for some strange reason. But I must say I will take them over a snake any day and I have those here too! Ugh

William - Therapy would be the only way to get over it at this point

Shar - Minnesota might be another option if my husband won't go for Canada :-)

Martha - It just seems like they are way more of them this year.  I'm not fond of snakes either.
