GET FOCUSED AND STOP MULTI-TASKING!

Do you pride yourself on your MULTI-TASKING skills?  Are you the consumate plate-spinner... deal juggler with many balls in the air at the same time?  You may be undermining your productivity by jumping from task-to-task!

A recent study from the University of Michigan shows that multi-tasking really reduces productivity by 20% to 40%!  By constantly asking your brain to re-focus and rebound you are actually ricocheting between the 2 or 3 or 4 projects you have going!

It turns out the secret to getting more done... is to focus on the task at hand.  Get it done-- then move on.

Here are several ways to keep yourself focused and really boost your productivity:

  • Wait on checking Facebook until you have read all your e-mails...  and answered them.
  • Don't click on links that will take you away from the task you are working on.
  • Take a break from your task-- then come back and focus.
  • Make lists of what you want to accomplish. If you think of another obligation, write it down and refocus!
  • Set a time-limit, and (if you need to... use a timer--there's one on your phone) get your task finished within the time you have set.

So stop multi-tasking and start getting more things done!

Guilty!

I know that we all can get caught up with too many things on our plate, especialy with social media to keep our attention (addiction?)

It is important to shut that stuff down some times and just WORK!

Kathi, I think people can only focus well on 2 or 3 things at one time. I see many of us trying to do too many. good post.

Kathy, you are right that a person needs to prioritize their work day.  One agent asked me a long while back, why don't you come into the office every day?  I replied, I have work to do, and don't have the time to socialize all day long.  We were the producers, and he sold one home that year.

I usually eat breakfast, drink coffee and read AR blogs at the same time.  I am eating and drinking coffee right now!

Sometimes I will listen to a training audio while I am stuffing, addressing and stamping envelopes.

Some tasks lend themselves well to multi-tasking, but most do not.

This is totally me. You should see me when I'm at home trying to clean. I start on something and then see something else that needs to be done and before you know it I'm off on another project.

Kathy this is something I teach all the time. I see so many agents - do this, do that, go there, and wonder why nothing gets done in a timely manner. Focus on the project on hand and it will get done quicker, smarter and better!

Thanks for this timely and great reminder. It only took me 7 minutes to write this response between checking email, looking at facebook and watching the baseball game. I will try to get better focused. Cal

Those are some hard habits to break and I have been doing better at not going away from one thing to do another, but I know I still have a long way to go until I'm fully not multitasking. I'm still going to write my posts while driving with voice recognition software, you aren't going to break me of that one.

Wow... I knew we all were guilty... but I had no idea!  Seems like many are thriving while multi-tasking, ( I'm texting, e-mailing, facebooking, roostering, blogging, commenting and watching a movie right now)   maybe that info is just bogus!  :--)  Kathy
