Where To Recycle in Tucson AZ - Hazardous Household Waste & Other Items

Just purchased a new printer - where do you go with the old one?  Got a new cell phone?  Don't throw the old one in the trash!!

The following is  a comprehensive list I put together of common items in your home that you should not be sending out to the local landfills.  Many of the items are not recyclable in your weekly recycle bin either.   Bookmark and save to your favorites for a ready reference!  Business hours and operation are subject to change, please call to confirm.

Tucson recycling binItems in the list include:

Hazardous waste

Aluminum Cans and Scrap Metal

Appliances

Automobiles and Parts

Batteries

Cell Phones

Computers and Electronics

Light bulbs

Oil – motor fluid, etc.

Packing Peanuts

Plastic Bags

Plastic Containers

Printers/copier cartridges

Televisions

Household Hazardous Waste

Electronics, household cleaners, automotive products – these items often contain materials that become a hazard to people and our environment when improperly discarded.   Don’t pour these items down the drain, toss in the trash, or store them in your garage for long periods of time.  There are many organizations and business that provide disposal options, as you will see in this list.

Do not place any hazardous chemical products or their containers in recycling bins, including oil and any other automotive fluids containers, dried or solidified cans of paint, pesticides, herbicides, pool chemicals and other hazardous product containers. These are not accepted in any recycling bin, Blue Barrel, or Neighborhood Recycling Center. The empty hazardous waste containers may be disposed of in your garbage container. Unused medicines should be placed in your garbage container. Do not place medicines in toilets or drains, as this can affect water treatment plants and contaminate the environment.

Tucson and surrounding community residents in Pima County are invited to bring automotive fluids, engine oil filters, auto batteries, rechargeable batteries (Ni-Cd, Ni-MH, Li-ion, Pb), small button batteries, lithium batteries, cleaning products, drain openers, cooking oil, mercury containing products, fluorescent lamps, paint products, solvents, hobby chemicals, pesticides, lawn & garden products, pool chemicals, propane cylinders, computer equipment, printer cartridges, and other items labeled as acid, flammable, caustic, poison, caution, toxic, danger, or warning to your closes HHW Collection program site.  All wastes must be properly labeled, and should not leak. These sites can accept a maximum of 5 gallons of each type of home-generated (non-business) chemical waste and up to 25 gallons of paint. Large quantities of materials should be delivered to the main site on Sweetwater Dr.  Fees may apply for larger quantities.

Materials are accepted free of charge!

A member of the Oro Valley Police Department member sent me this:  I wanted to make you aware of the dispose a med program that most police department put on. Check out this web site and it will give you dates of events. They take in meds and oro valley is the only one taking in liquids and needles. We take it to DEA for in incineration. This keeps it out of the water, land fills and most important, kids hands. www.disposeamed.pima.gov/   Thank you Amy!

The HHW Collection Program is jointly sponsored by the City of Tucson and Pima County.  Please bring your household hazardous waste materials to the proper sites for disposal.

Plastic Bags

Plastic bags are an excellent example of the phrase, Reduce – Reuse – Recycle.  1. The best you can do is reduce litter and waste by using a long-lasting shopping bag.  2. Reuse the plastic bags when you go shopping. Many stores give you “cash back” for doing so.  You may also reuse the grocery plastic bags to properly dispose of your garbage; just tie them tight to prevent litter and to reduce odors and flies.  3. In the Tucson area, plastic bags should never be disposed of through a curbside or public drop-off recycling service.  Some stores have plastic bag drop off locations, like Walmart and Fry’s. Just make sure that they are clean and empty (i.e., receipts removed); otherwise they can not be processed. Plastic bags can also be a hazard to wildlife and livestock. Please do your part to reduce waste and litter by making it a habit of minimizing your use of plastic bags.

Plastic Containers, Buckets, Plant Pots & Caps

In the Tucson area, the only plastics recyclable through traditional curbside recycling are the bottles and jugs with a screw-on cap or a neck, marked with a # 1 (PETE) or # 2 (HDPE) and which are not hazardous material containers; any other plastic items, even if marked with a numbered recycling symbol, cannot be recycled at the curbside in the Tucson metro area. Unless you have an alternative to reuse or recycle it, you should dispose of that plastic in the garbage container.

Certain businesses and organizations can accept and reuse or recycle certain types of plastic materials. Plastic buckets, plant pots, pill bottles and certain types of container caps are not recyclable in Tucson area curbside recycling programs. Reuse or donate them when possible. Kj Alseth

Coming from an area in California where recycling is mandatory, I was surprised to find it so hard to locate a local recycling center that will accept plastic soda bottles.

I currently live in an apartment complex that does not have a separate recycling bin for such items.  Can I please ask for any locations close to the 85710 zip code that will accept them?

Thanks so much for your time!

I received this note I wanted to share with readers.  I will put it into the content of the bloga as well!  Thank you Amy ! I work with the police department and was doing some research and your site came up. I wanted to make you aware of the dispose a med program that most police department put on. Check out this web site and it will give you dates of events. They take in meds and oro valley is the only one taking in liquids and needles. We take it to DEA for in incineration. This keeps it out of the water, land fills and most important, kids hands.
