Lost in Translation

By
Real Estate Agent with Realty Direct Boston

I was on my way to work on yesterday, and as I drove through Neponset Street heading over the bridge to Realty Direct in Quincy,  there at the bus stop stood an elderly woman caught in the rain, and being drenched as it poured in torrents.  I looked over at her as my car was stopped by the traffic light, and  I caught her eye, and she mine.  But I thought nothing much more of it, and pulled up, past the old woman.  As I looked in my side mirror, I saw the woman coming towards my car, and she looked at me through the passenger window, and I naturally rolled down the window as rain wet the inside of the car, and she said in her broken Asian Accent "Trong".  Then I, in my mind thought about my Broker Owner at Realty Direct whose name is Tom Truong.  As a real estate agent, I thought, does this woman know me, or have I done business with her in the past, or is she on her way to my office with an appointment to see Tom Truong, and what a shame it would be if I passed by her, and then saw her later coming in out of the rain into the office.  So I said, "Are you going to see Tom Troung, and she said---Trong.  She reached for the door, and I let her inside my car.  As she took off her straw funnel styled hat and the rain poured to the floor, she said thank you.  Then I realized my dilemma, who is this woman that I just let in my car?  I can't speak her language and she apparently can't speak mine. Then She began to say "thank you, you very nice"  She must have repeated that over twenty times, and I responded, thank you.

As we drove over the bridge, and came upon my office at 133 Hancock Street, I stopped in front of the office door, and told her this is my office, and where Tom Truong is. she smiled but made no motions to get out to meet TomTruong, then I knew I had a problem. She pointed straight ahead and said trong, and I thought what is straight ahead that sounds like trong, then it hit me--Train--about 1/2 mile ahead was the train station.  I drove her to the door of the train station as she got more excited, and she graciously got out and said, you very nice, and hurried out of the rain into the train station. The conversation was lost in translation, but the experience was heart warming. I felt good the rest of the day.

It was an exercise in humanity.  I think I passed the test.  I wonder what the next one will be.

Thanks for commenting.
