Did You Defy Physics Today and Make the Most of Your Day??

One of the nice benefits of living in the country is you just never know what "critter" may show up next.  We've had four young raccoons foraging for berries in the a tree in our front yard, chipmunks at the bottom of the driveway, running around like bumper cars with their tails straight up!  Just a riot to watch.

Our newest additions to the nature preserve, some hummingbirds!  So far, two female and one male have been working our feeder.  It's not like my granddad's in West Virginia where he'd have 40, 50 or more all waiting their turns to hit his feeders, but at least we've got a start.

The problem?  I'd love to get a picture, but two challenges... they're REALLY fast, and I'd guess they have superb eyesight too and know I'm just the other side of the window waiting with the finger on the camera ready to click!

What I usually get when I try to get their picture is this:

Feeder

See 'em there?  Nope, me neither...in, out and gone so fast it would embarass a ninja!

The best I've been able to do is this:
Hummingbird at feeder

and this:

Hummingbird at feeder 2

Don't adjust your prescription eyeglasses, it is a bit blurry, and in more ways than just their wings!

And you'd swear it would be impossible for them to fly the way they
do...isn't there some scientific study that says bumblebees and
hummingbirds can't fly?  But yet they do... there might be a lesson in
that for us too!  Trust your God given gifts and make the most of your
life!

Hope you're having a great week!

I'd like to say it was because we're your favorites, but it's time based!  Most recent posts move to the top, working down to the longest ago new post.   They certainly are little blazes of speed!

Aren't they simply amazing!  We're pretty fond of Bluebirds as well.  A close friend seems to really have the touch -- her feeders are always filled with Hummingbirds and they're all so different.  I absolutely adore the babies.

Wasn't today Monday?  Oh, yeah -- that was No Rain Morning Madness yesterday.  Almost made me cry.

Good one Bill. I have got a setting on my camera called "sports continuous" I haven't tried it yet...maybe that is the kind of thing that will get this kind of shot.

I have been trying get photos of flags flying with the humming bird results. The flags are up and down before I can get the shot. At least houses don't move.

So true!  So many may say this or that is impossible, but we know what we can do. :)

Oh, about the hummingbirds, they also stay nicely in one place and pose when you DO NOT have your camera ready.

Love hummingbirds and can't believe how quickly they flutter!  La Jollans have their own critters... the other night my dog was barking in the backyard and when I called her in she had been "skunked".... needless to say, a bath of ketchup and a night in the garage was in order!  ~ Susan

Tish, We found a little hummingbird nest a few years ago just above our deck.  Got the ladder out and got baby bird pictures of them.  Itty bitties!

Barbara, Michael is so much better than I could ever hope to be, and his cameras easily trump my cameraphone!    I'll have to go find that pictures he has!

Steve, this is just my cell phone, and the little birds don't like to cooperate!

Kristen, Exactly!  Too many people (especially in our profession) get hung up on what people tell them they can't do.  Just got to expand the box a bit and go for it!

And you're right, they'll sit there as long as I DON'T have a camera!

Susan,

We've been lucky, occasionally smell a skunk, but no close encounters!  Doesn't sound like you had much fun with yours!

Shelley, You've had better luck than me!  I can see them sitting in the surrounding trees, I'm frozen with the camera against the window, but they don't come down until I'm further away!

More feeders equals more birds.  I have a lovely friend who has about 12 feeders across the her deck & sitting out there is equivalent to a WWII bombing raid!

Jenna, My grandfather had about 5 or 6 in Cass, WV.  They were lined up on the electric wires waiting for their chance to swoop in!

Liz....We too have hummingbirds around our house and I love to watch them.  It is amazing how they can flit around so quickly, hover, move up and down, side to side - seems impossible but the proof is in watching them.  I haven't tried to take any pictures yet but can see you must be fast on the shutter.

Carra, I need to break out the actual camera to have a prayer.  The cameraphone has a second or two delay between pressing the button and activating.  That's how I got the first picture!  There was one there when I pressed, but by click time, 30 feet away and perched in a tree!  Love to watch them!  We haven't had them every year, but more flowers in the yard and the feeder seem to be getting them in!

Liz, I think they like the feeder to be in the trees (or in the fern in my case) so they less exposed.  I can get mine to come around while I'm sitting 5 feet away as long as I'm still.

Shelley, You were our 2000th comment since we started blogging in June!  We don't have any trees close enough to the house to keep a close eye on the feeder.  There are a few close enough that they buzz over and guard the feeder from there!

Ah, yes, the problem with getting pictures of hummingbirds. I have tens of dozens around my house because I plant hummingbird-friendly plants. And guess how many hummingbird pictures I've gotten? Well, I think you're ahead of me with just this one post. LOL

We've got three regulars now, one male, two female.  All of them try to chase the others off.  We bought a 2nd feeder yesterday, just need to put it out.  Hopefully it will diminish the turf wars!
