Sprint Android Phone - Samsung Epic 4G Review Video

This is a video review of Sprint's Samsung Epic 4G Android phone, which was released for sale on August 31, 2010. The Epic 4G (a Galaxy S phone) is Sprint's latest and greatest powerhouse Android phone and it has the most spectacular display I've ever seen...they call it their "Super AMOLED" screen.

The Samsung Epic 4G was Bob's choice of phone, when we decided to take advantage of the EPRP plan savings by switching over from AT&T. Since Bob has been using an iPhone 3G for the past couple of years, I think it should be somewhat of a smooth transition to an Android. We'll see...we just received our Android phones this afternoon! :)

Thanks for your interest in following our experience with the Samsung Epic 4G (Galaxy S) Android phone, Jim! So far, based on half a day's use:

  1. Phone reception is better in Southwest Placer County than our iPhone with AT&T. We drove through 4 AT&T "dead" spots where we drop calls all the time with the iPhone and Sprint only dropped calls in 2 of those "dead" spots.
  2. As I said in the post, the display is FAR SUPERIOR on the Epic 4G.
  3. Even with the additional $10 surcharge for the 4G phones (Epic and EVO), Sprint's EPRP plan is still a lot cheaper than AT&T.

So far, so good...but Bob wants to wait a couple more days before he ports his number! :)

I have another year to go on my Blackberry Storm.  And I am Verizon all the way.  Will see what's available next year.  So many choices.

My phone still just makes and receives phone calls. As long as it does that, I'm keeping it! LOL

I bet you're having fun with the new toy tool this weekend.  I saw one and it's very similar to an iphone.

I know, Karen...we just either have to go with what's available at the time we're ready to make the switch or set our sights on an "upcoming" phone and wait for it to be released. I'm a scenario #1 type of person. Good luck with your new phone decision! :)

Jane, a year from now I think almost the entire line of phone models may be replaced! Verizon does always have a wide selection of phones to choose from, so I doubt you'll have any problems choosing...except maybe you might have too many phones to choose from! ;)

You're right, Georgina...the Epic 4G is similar to an iPhone, with the slide-out keyboard feature being the most noticeable difference upfront. We never upgraded to the iPhone 4, but the Epic 4G display sure beats the iPhone 3G's display! :)

Funny thing about this is that I JUST sent my husband an e-mail about 2 weeks ago and let him know that this was probably going to be my next phone!  Awesome!  I'm sending him this link so he can check it out as well.  Thanks for posting and I can't wait to hear what Bob thinks about this phone.  Is he still holding out on his iPhone?

Renae, I think he loves it so far...but Bob isn't one to get excited about a phone (unlike me - I LOVE my pink Samsung Intercept!!!) and he isn't fond of change (unlike me - but opposites attract!) He is definitely impressed with the volume when playing music on Pandora, it's about 3x as loud as the iPhone 3G. I love the fact that the contacts are linked to Facebook, MySpace and Twitter and everyone's avatar appears on the contact list, which is also a feature of the Epic 3G (and probably all Android phones?)

I'll be writing an update later this week...after one week of use! :)

What is WITH men being so predictable?? :-) My husband is the same way. He thinks his phone is ok (but I think it's really cool). He'd rather keep the same one forever (kind of like Russell!) and I can't wait to try something new. I thought I was going to go with the Sprint Evo until I realized that it didn't have an actual keyboard (just the onscreen one). Following this post to be sure not to miss your update! ~Renae

Too funny, Renae!!! :D I wasn't even thinking of switching providers/phones, but came across Sprint's Everything Plus Referral Program (see link in comment #2) and figured out the savings were going to be $90/month, so that gave me a little push...plus after having the iPhone, I found I did miss the keyboard since I tend to text with numbers a lot (and the slide-out keyboard lets me select a number without having to click twice!)

Personally, I like the smaller size of the Intercept vs. the Epic...or even more, the large Evo. I'm old fashioned and don't use an earpiece, so size and weight are important, as I do still hold the phone to my ear when I talk. :)

Renae, I actually wrote a "week one" review of our Android phones...but hold on...bigger news...we just may switch from Sprint to Verizon (reception issues) and if so, I will have to give up my pink phone. This means I may get the Droid 2...we'll see...and we're going to the Verizon store later today! :)

Renae! :)

Well, the phones were absolutely WONDERFUL...but unfortunately, the reception in our area was not so good. Ultimately, we decided to send the phones back to Sprint and will be getting similar phones with Verizon instead, since their reception is supposedly even better than AT&T (which we have now with our iPhones). I wonder what new models Verizon will have out in the next month or two...???

Leilani

P.S. I'm wanting to hold out for Verizon to release a satin pink Android phone like Sprint's Samsung Intercept. :)
