Barns of Oregon: The rich history of Oregon Farming

By
Real Estate Agent with Keller Williams Realty

I love Oregon and I love driving outside the major cities to get pictures of old barns. The history of these barns just fascinates me and knowing some of these barns have been in the same family for many generations is awesome and says a lot about Oregon and their stance on family tradition.

Though you won’t find barns like this in Portland it certainly doesn’t take a long drive to find them. Many are located on the outskirts of Beaverton and there are many throughout the Washington County area. Many of these photos were taken all over Oregon and aren’t limited to Washington County, but they do show the rich history of Oregon in each and every picture.

Thanks for sharing "your" barns... they're beautiful.

When I'm out and about and spot an old barn, I just have to stop and take a picture. I have one that is leaning so far that I expected it to fall over. Eventually it did... and I miss seeing it when I drive by.

Another one I call "The Lace Barn," because both walls and roof have so many holes the light shines through. I don't go that way often, so don't know if it's still standing.

As a kid, we had a barn on the property that my great-grandfather had built... with wooden pegs. Maybe that's why I'm so fond of old barns now.

Great photos as usual, Todd!!!  I used to live in a rural area with barns and they were absolutely beautiful!  There are still quite a few around here that have the old advertisements painted on the sides - LOVE THEM!

Todd,

That top one is a classic. The old barns are such a part - a disappearing part - of Americana. :)

I spent summers on my grandparents' farm in Malin, OR, growing up. They had a couple of really cool old barns. Wish I had pictures to share.

Todd - Love the slideshow!  A while back I saw a company that removes barns that are falling apart and makes a pretty penny selling the wood.

I have some great growing up memories of working and playing in barns. I have often thought it would be cool to renovate a barn into one's home. Maybe some day.

I'm glad everyone is enjoying the pictures. Cal, here is a house that was converted from a barn, believe me I wish I could get inside.

I never saw many barns from my area of the country.  However, my dad was from rural Ohio and they were everywhere last time I visited.  Great pictures Todd.

Nice pictures. One of the things I loved very much when I worked in Oregon was the barns and the covered bridges. Oregon is blessed with a lot of both.

What great barns!  Funny how there is such a connection between barns and the nostalgia for days gone by...My favorite childhood summers were spent playing in the barn of my great-aunt in Missouri - climbing up the hay bales & hunting for eggs (which occasionally involved accidentally terrorizing the chickens).
