A Unique Shopping Experience at the Greenbrier's Art Colony Retail Shops - Part 1, Mackenzie-Dow Fine Furniture

Overlooking the Springhouse at The Greenbrier Resort atop a hill, called Alabama Row, are eight retail stores....aptly called the Art Colony Shops.  A porch stretches from one end to the other, making it easy to stop at each shop or just relax on the benches and take in the magnificent mountain views.  The view from this spot is awesome anytime of the year!

The Art Colony is an unique experience.  Skilled artisans, working in metal, leather, brass, wood, glass and pottery, are resident in these shops, many of them demonstrating their craft on-site.  I will be writing about each of the eight retail shops in no particular order.

Gary and Alicia Adams, owners

The first shop......Mackenzie-Dow Fine Furniture, a family-owned business.  The company is based in Huntington, WV, and the owners, Gary and Alicia Adams, employ about 40 people.  They opened their doors one month after September 11, 2001, and the company has been going strong ever since.

Working strictly in Appalachian wild black cherry, the local craftsmen and women employ 17th and 18th century woodworking techniques to construct elegant creations that promise both enduring value and sophisticated style.  Each piece is entirely bench-crafted – hand-planed, glazed, waxed and hand-finished -- resulting in a finished product that begs to be touched.

Adams states, "…wild black cherry, a species native to America’s abundant Appalachian forest, allows us to appreciate nature’s blemishes while not affecting the structural integrity of our product.  The singular beauty of solid Appalachian Black Cherry ensures that no two pieces will ever be alike.  Each Mackenzie-Dow design is an original masterpiece – a true work of art – signed and sealed by nature.  Personalization is available through a variety of finish options as well as custom sizing on most items."

Aimee Hanna & Galya GalyeanSome of MacKenzie-Dow’s signature pieces can be found at The Biltmore Hotel, the Hotel Hershey and The Greenbrier Sporting Club lodge.  While MacKenzie-Dow’s furniture is also represented in design showrooms and retail stores across the country,

their own retail store, located at the Art Colony, which opened in June of this year, offers a wide array of their furniture.

Managed by Aimee Hanna and sales associate, Galya Galyean, the store is opened every day from 10:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.
