Throwing Spaghetti Against the Wall: "Spam" from Colleagues?

About half of the email messages that I get these days come from Realtors sending out mass messages to their colleagues about their listings.  They can be new listings, open houses, price reductions, or some other version of "Bring me an offer!  Pul-eeze!"

Three of the local companies doing it here in DC send out pretty attractive mailings with all of the important information and a quick link to a virtual tour.  And I do appreciate getting their emails, because in many cases I have buyers who might be interested in the subject of the message.

But there are others who seem to send these messages to the entire real estate world, and those I find annoying.  These are in parts of the area that aren't even in the area.  I got one the other day from West Virginia.  One came in from Pennsylvania.  I get them from builders advertising new construction projects that are more than one tank of gas away from my office.  And while this would be acceptable from someone I know and like in a far off area, I don't welcome these emails from strangers who are sort of thowing spaghetti against the wall - especially when I am the wall!

I remember one of Brian Buffini's rules of engagement:  don't do anything to people when you are prospecting that you don't like when you are on the receiving end.  That would include junk phone calls at dinner time, junk mail, and now I'm adding real estate spam.

Whatever we send out , however we send it, needs to provide something of value to the recipient.  The messages from local colleagues about new listings in my market area - that usually is providing something of value.

Yes, I know you can always unsubscribe, and I'm doing a lot of that lately.  But I think it's far better to avoid being a pest in the first place.  Like, ask yourself, will this message help or irritate the recipiant?
