After the Interviews, Could You Let Us Know What You Decided?

By
Real Estate Agent with RE/MAX Elite 513.265.3004 www.LizTour.com SAL.2002007747

Dear Home Seller,
On behalf of ourselves and our real estate industry, we have a small request for you.  We're here to serve YOU, but
when you make that decision about who to hire to list your home, could you let us know?  We're professionals, we won't yell, scream, question your heritage or anything like that!  We're not saying it's rude not to let the agents know who didn't get your listing, but we're all human...we're curious, we'd like to have closure!

When you decide to use another agent to list your home, we understand!  We may be disappointed, but we understand.  Either we didn't effectively communicate how we could serve YOU
, maybe you didn't like our valuation of your home, maybe our personalities didn't click, or perhaps the other agent offered something you valued more!  It happens!

We don't win them all despite our best efforts, but when the way we find out we DIDN'T get hired by you is when the MLS entry goes in?  Well, at that point, we can't even contact you to ask why without violating our ethics code!  And we'd love to know why.... it's how we improve our business and service!

So if you don't mind, please pick up the phone or drop us an email and let us know.  We know you're under no obligation, but we'd really appreciate the understanding!

And if we do get your listing?  The other agents who didn't get the listing probably feel the same way, so please let them know too!

Thanks!

We hope you're having a fantastic weekend!

Liz and Bill

OK, now that I got that off my chest, I shall state that I am in full agreement with your stated idea.

It is just common courtesy.  They are probably are expecting an argument from us if they call. I ask them to call because I tell them it's  exit interview to help better my business.

Phil, You're killing me man! :)

Carrie, No objections here!  We'd like one thing, reality is another thing :)

Chris and Patty, and occasionally they do probably get that argument.  We like your exit interview approach.  The corporate types should appreciate that!

We'll probably have to chalk this up to wishful thinking. The reason for their overlooking the update could be classic conflict avoidance or just thoughtlessness. Either way, I wouldn't overanalyze or internalize the issue.

Think of it this way, when was the last time that HR called or emailed to say that someone was not selected after interviews. Usually, there is the general disclaimer that only candidates who are blah yiddah will be contacted further. We're only suffering the business version of this disclaimer.

Shouldn't you know the next action steps for you and your prospects after every meeting regardless of the circumstances?

Expecting a call from a prospect to inform you about their decision to do business with you is unlikely, so take control and if your prospect is on the fence, simply ask them if you should call them for a decision in a few days, weeks or months and follow up.

If prospects keep putting you off, politely tell them your services are limited because you're busy and can only accommodate a few more clients and waiting for a decision indefinitely isn't going to assure you of providing them the service. Simply, thank them for their time and move on, you'll be glad you did.

Kimo, We may have action steps, but it takes two to tango, and if one side doesn't want to dance, they won't engage...phone calls ignored, emails not returned.  In that case, there's a high probability that they've already made their decision and it doesn't include us.

The discussion you mention would be best in person, although that technique might not fit everyone's style.  The average Midwesterner we encounter MIGHT feel  that you're trying to drive them into a false sense of urgency...there's are thousands of you....NEXT!!

We don't have qualms about moving on... especially with a listing we didn't/aren't getting.  Just part of the business, we don't get them all, but as long as we get most of them, we'll continue to be all right! :)

Bill and Liz: Embarrassment or fear of disappointing and confrontation may be why they do not call back.

I do think its nice to get that feedback, but find that people often don't want to deliver bad news.  I am in the boat with folks though that follow up would be good as well....hopefully a quick email will give them the space they need to at least let you know they went with someone else.

Sonja, Just a little closure, right?  It's ok, just don't leave us hanging for an extended time.  Particularly bad with buyers, at least a seller you can see in MLS!

Manners would be nice but I have to agree with comment #20.  It usually doesn't happen that way.   I always call the next day or before they said they were going to make a decision to make sure that they weren't left with any questions etc.  A great time to touch base.   If I don't hear back that is usually a good indication that they have chosen someone else.

Monica, Essentially the same here.  The attempt(s) is made to follow up.  In this case, silence is NOT golden!

I agree with your post especially the closure part. It doesn't seem the common courtesy anymore for people to call.

Agreed. We Take the time to do a CMA, dress up and usually leave our loved ones while we go to work and sit there spending our time with them. ( I have had presentations that have gone for hours). A simple we decided to go in another direction would be nice.

Rayna, In general, the public probably has no idea how much prep time typically goes into a listing presentation, then throw in the hours physically at the home and at a minimum you've got a 1/2 day invested in each meeting.  Even an email would be fine...it's not like they don't know how to find us!
