OMG What Is That? Is That a Castle in Kansas City?

What's that sticking up over those houses?

castle in Old NE Kansas City

Do you see it? To the left of the brick house? Is that a turret? Where are we?

The house/castle was built in 1909 by Dr. Flavel Tiffany. Dr. Tiffany was one of the foremost ENT doctors in 1878 and one of the founders of the Kansas City Medical College.

Architect Clifton C. Sloan designed the castle for Dr. Tiffany in the medieval Normandy style. It took several years to construct the home.

Tiffany Castle was the first residential building in Kansas City to be designed using reinforced concrete.

When Dr. Tiffany died in 1918, Dr. C.S. McClintock bought the castle. Dr. McClintock died 3 years later, leaving the castle vacant for years afterward. Broken windows let the wind blow throught the castle making howling, eerie sounds; rumors that the castle was haunted permeated the neighborhood. Tiffany Castle in Old NE Kansas City

Children dared one another to enter the castle. The police were called in to investigate reports of vandalism. They found that the castle had been used as headquarters for a gang of car thieves.

Another doctor, E.R. Millis, bought Tiffany Castle in 1924. The castle was originally built at a cost of $75,000. It's estimated that Dr. Millis spent more than $25,000 restoring the castle.

Several people have owned the castle since Dr. Millis' time. And now it's time for the castle to have a new owner. Could it be you?

Tiffany Castle, in Old NE Kansas City, is currently listed for sale at the very attractive price of $450,000. MLS 1694040.

The castle, located just south of Cliff Drive, is at 100 Garfield Avenue in Old NE Kansas City. sastle for sale in Kansas City

Kathy Stone and Walter Guth of Prudential Kansas City Realty listed the castle ifor sale on 9/10/2010.

Though small for a Normandy Castle, the house is 4,282 square feet large per the tax records. The lot is also manageable at 0.4acre.

The interior woodwork is of the highest quality. The turret houses the gracefully curving staircase to the second floor and rooftop.

The castle has several pocket doors, lead and stained glass, a gorgeous stone fireplace, a butlers' pantry, and the most awesome wrap around porch for entertaining.

If I were to buy this castle in the Old NE, I would put in marble countertops in the kitchen and change out the skylights.

Only $450,000 for that! I afraid to ask why so low as I believe any buyer would.  I love older homes and that home has all the charm and character that someone would love to have.

Hey can you zone it commercial.  You could open a real estate office and call yourself the Queen of Kansas City!

Larry, it really is very reasonably priced. The kitchen could use some updating but the unique home is magnificent inside.

How fun is that.  It's even more fun that it's still privately owned.

Maria - I think that would cost a fortune in my area. I would definitely sign up for that broker's tour.

It would, Liz!

Kate, there is a home in the Old NE that has been turned into a museum and a few that have been repurposed for school or community interests but most remain privately held.

Judy, the wine and appetizers were delish!

Good to see you, Ann!

It's so funny, my son was telling me this morning about a castle 'we' have listed in Kansas City. I had to get online to find it. How cool.

Maria,

Be sure to stop back there at Christmas time and see if they decorate it. I would love to see that post!

They say a man's house is his castle... I wonder who lives there and why it was built like this? You're lucky to have some major attraction in your town that's so unique to Realtors!
